RESTRICTED VISIBILITY CHECKLIST

This checklist is to be completed by the Officer(s) on watch on every occasion where

visibility of less than three miles is experienced. An entry shall be made in Deck Log Book
with an appropriate note.

 Master called

 Reduction to safe speed in accordance with International Regulation for Prevention of

Collisions at Sea
 Engine Room placed on S.B.E.

 Two steering motors running

 Hand steering engaged if in close proximity to other vessels or heavy traffic

 Both radar’s and ARPA operating and plotting commenced. Radar’s to be operated on
different ranges
 Lookouts posted (audio and visual)

 Prescribed fog signal sounded

 Echo sounder operating, if in area of surroundings

 VHF operating on channel 16 and any other locally required channel. The following
action shall be avoided
 If position is in doubt, possibility of anchoring should be considered
