CHECKLIST FOR PASSAGE PLANNING

This checklist is to be completed by the office on voyage/passage planning. The


completed checklist shall be filed in the voyage/passage planning record. Records of this
checklist are to be retained for a minimum on 3 years.

 Select largest scale appropriate charts for the passage.


 Check that all charts to be used have been corrected up to date from the latest
information available.
 Check that all radio navigational warnings affecting the area have been received.
 Check that sailing directions and relevant lists of lights have been corrected up to
date
 Estimate the draught of the ship during the various stages of the passage.
 Study sailing directions for advice and recommendation on route to be taken.
 Consult current atlas to obtain direction and rate of set.
 Study climatologically information for weather characteristics of the area.
 Study charted navigational aids and coastline characteristics for landfall and position
monitoring purposes.
 Check the requirements of traffic separation and routing schemes.
 Consider volume and flow of traffic likely to be encountered.
 Access the coverage of radio aids to navigation in the area and degree of accuracy of
each.
 Study the maneuvering characteristics of the ship to decided upon safe speed and,
where appropriate, allowance for turning circle at course alteration points.
 If a pilot is to be embarked, make a careful study of the area at the pilot boarding
point for preplanning intended maneuvers.
 Where appropriate, study all available port information data.
 Check any additional items which may be requited by the type of ship, the particular
locality, or the passage to be undertaken.
