Rights and duties are the same conditions viewed from different

Rights and duties are the two sides of the same coin
OR
RIGHTS: “Rights are legal, social, or ethical principles of freedom or entitlement; that is, rights are the
fundamental normative rules about what is allowed of people or owed to people according to some
legal system, social convention, or ethical theory.”
The linking together of rights and responsibilities is commonplace in everyday thought and conversation.
As there is a close relationship between the body and soul, so there is a relationship between the rights
and duties.
“Every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity an obligation, every possession a duty.”
John D. Rockfeller
Traditionally Islam is explained in terms of the moral value of actions ranging from prohibited to
obligatory. In Islam, rights and responsibilities are inseparable, and one cannot be assigned a right
without also accepting some responsibilities. In Islamic philosophy and jurisprudence, as it pertains to
the domestic society, a good example of a right and responsibility is in the economic relationship of the
roles of a husband and wife. For example:
A wife has a right to financial support from her husband. In exchange, however, she has a
responsibility to guard their home when he is away and remain "obedient to him in matters in
which she is required to obey him" per their marriage contract (e.g. prenuptial agreement).
Similarly, parents have certain obligations to their children and also have some rights.
Children have the right to life, good upbringing, and to be married off. These are the duties of
the parents. On the other hand, it is the duty of children to behave well with their parents at
their older age which is the right of their parents.
“The difference between a right and a duty is similar to the difference between the active and passive
voice.”
Rights can be enjoyed only in the world of duties. For every right there is corresponding duty. When the
people fail to discharge their duties properly, the rights all become meaningless.
I can enjoy my rights only if the others perform their duties. Our right is another man’s duty while
another man’s right is our duty.
If ‘A’ has the right to life then it is the duty of ‘B’ to facilitate ‘A’ to live his life and not to cause
any harm to him.
If our neighbor has the right to freedom of religion we have a duty to admit his right.
If students have the right to study then it is the duty of teachers to prepare lessons and teach
them in classroom.
Rights never come without duties and are not the monopoly of a single individual.
If a student has the right to study then he also has a responsibility to listen the teacher in
classroom carefully.
If a citizen has the right to cast vote then he also has a duty to exercise it judiciously in electing
a candidate, without being swayed by religious, caste and monetary considerations.
If state allows us to use a road then it is our duty to abide by the traffic rules.
If state protects us then it becomes our cardinal duty to pay taxes regularly and to remain
faithful and loyal to state.
If state gives us the right to caste vote then it is our duty to elect a right candidate for the
welfare of our country.
