There are more than nine million people in Britain between five and sixteen years
old. Between them they spend 60 million pounds a year. One study says that the
average young person in Britain gets 6.70 pounds (about 10€) pocket money every
week. Teenagers between 15 and 16 get most money. They spend most of their
money on CDs, DVDs, fashion and trainers. Boys spend more on food and drink and
computer games. Girls spend 50% more on mobile phones. Very few teenagers save
money. Only 19% of teenagers have a bank account.

Parents often also give teenagers money to buy extra things or birthday presents for
family members. Some families pay teenagers money to do jobs in the house (for
example, cleaning and tidying). Another study says, 29% of boys and 12% of girls
do two hours of housework a week to earn money.

Many teenagers in Britain also earn some money from doing a job like working in
shops, baby-sitting (looking after young children) or gardening. According to
European law, during the school year, teenagers can work for:

- a maximum of two hours on Sundays
- a maximum of five hours (13-14 years olds) or eight hours (15-16
years olds) on Saturdays.
