CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

During socialization, people learn the language of the culture they are born as well as the

roles they are to play in life. Generation Z is the generation of people that are expected to be active

and participative in different kind of aspects. In school, students have different behaviors as they

involve themselves into various kinds of activities to learn, explore, experience, and some are just

to go with the flow. These various kinds of activities are the practices that students do to belong

and be part of something such as group or organization moreover, the socialization practices.

According to P. Mooseman, socialization is the process by which individuals learn the skills

and knowledge to be effective members of a particular group or society. It is all the lessons taught

every day, all day long, through a person’s environment. As we all do not just know and observe,

we actually engage ourselves with this process every day and people learn certain things because

of this. Hodges also defined socialization as a procedure of development, building up a person in

exceptional, procedure of advancement in identity and it is accepting a person into a society. As

Epitacio Palispis and Elias Sampa mentioned in an article, the process of socialization is the key

why the society continues. In personality formation and development of an individual, the process

of socialization plays a very essential role. The long period of being dependent allows people to

learn things they need to know in order to care for themselves and become members in this

society.

1
While school can be a positive social experience for many children, for others it can be a

nightmare. School is not only a place where children learn reading, writing and math, it is also a

place where they learn to get along with other people and develop social skills. As Lawson

mentioned, social skills are the skills we need to interact adaptively in our culture environment.

According also to Dombeck, being able to socialize well is one of the main reasons that

having good social skills is important. Time spent socializing can help build your confidence (or at

least keep it from sinking lower), strengthen your sense that life has meaning and purpose, raise

your spirits and confidence and help protect you against the effects of stress and loss.

Moreover, socialization at school includes the different kinds of behavior that students

practicing in order to get involve and these might both positively or negatively help them in boosting

their academic performance since this socialization is important in the process of personality

formation. That is why socialization practices must be chosen and practiced properly and

accordingly because it will probably affect student’s academic performance, for what you practice

is what you learn, and what you learn is what you get.

resulting to your relationship with your fellow. Some of the problems of the students at school is

having a hard time of befriending or socializing other students. This affects their behaviour that is

why there are students who just choose to be quiet than being participative in class because they
