Lecture Review
Key Concepts: Summarise your understanding of this week’s lecture content.

• Identify and describe the three-sector model of sport. Provide two examples
for each sector. (5 marks)
The 3 sector model is the interrelationship between all 3 sectors which consist of the public
sector, non profit sector and professional sector. The 3 sector model demonstrates how all the
facilities and services are shared and how each sector benefits from each other. Sporting
organizations are developing partnerships to increase profit as well as reputation amongst other
industries. The public sector focusses on sports facilities and services which are government funded
such as the AIS(Australian Institute of Sport) and the Sydney Olympic Park Swimming Centre built for
the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. The non-profit sector is where all profit and income made from the
business is reinvested into the club for future growth and are mainly run by volunteers who aim to
maximize participation in their sport. These include your local sporting clubs such as Concord JSC and
Concord Briars Cricket Club. The professional sector are sports organizations and businesses who are
run to make a profit such as the West Tigers and Sydney FC.

• Outline five special features of sport (5 marks)

Five special or unique features of sport include fans being extremely loyal, sport always contains a
fierce physical rivalry, teams compete on the field and cooperate off the field, fans have irrational
passions for their teams, competitions or athletes and the emotional power of sport is unmatched.
In every sport, fans are extremely loyal towards their team, showing dedication to support their
team through the highs and lows of the season for many, many years. In sport there is always
a fierce physical rivalry such as a Manchester derby in the English Premier League where the two
teams competing Manchester United and Manchester City have a hatred for each other on the field.
Both teams will intentionally make bad tackles or hard tackles to let the opposition aware
that it’s not going to be a fun game. This competitive and fierce rivalry in sport isn’t seen in outside
of sport such as between major sportswear brands such as Nike and Adidas. In sport teams will
cooperate off the field in order to hype up a major event or game in return increasing the income
surrounding that retrospective event or game, thus creating exposure and more money for the
businesses involved. This can be seen with the NRL for the Origin series between NSW and
QLD where both captains have a press conference in the build up to the series aiming to hype up the
event, gaining more publicity and media attention in return creating a bigger scene for the game and
series to be played on with more viewers online and sell-out crowds. This therefore overall earns
more money for all businesses and organizations involved which outside of sport is not seen
between two rival brands. In sport fans have an irrational passion for their team, competition or
athlete that they support. For some fans, this team is one of the few things that can bring
them happiness and joy in their life and they support those teams for ever.  This can be seen at the
2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia where an unexpected team, Iceland managed to be the dark horse
amongst the other top countries and fought their way through to the finals. They were known for
having a Viking clap as a chant that they made their own, so much so that other fans joined in on the
Viking clap. Some fans don’t have a specific team but show their support towards a major
competition such as the FIFA World Cup, Cricket World Cup and many other competitions where
they have that irrational passion for the sport being played. Lastly the emotional power of sport is
unmatched compared to any other fragment of society. For example in the 2014 FIFA World Cup the
hosts Brazil were shockingly knocked out of the competition before the finals stage, this brought
thousands of supporters to tears especially when they lost 7-1 to Brazil, the fans were distraught,
people of all ages, experiencing the same emotion from a sport game.

• Explain the effect of globalization on sport (3 marks)

The effect of globalization on sport is that as the world becomes closer together, everything they do
becomes more apparent to other countries and therefore more games are played, televised,
marketed and streamed. For sports that are played specifically in one country or a limited number of
countries, globalization offers the exposure to a new and intrigued audience allowing that sport to
grow, gaining sponsorship, fans creating a domino affect leading towards one of many major
sporting competitions world wide.
