While many people argue that sports play an essential role in social
development, others claim that it is nothing more than a recreational activity.
From my perspective, I am of the former school of thought.
Admittedly, there is some truth in the view that sports are generally just
a daily pastime. First, apart from a minor segment of the population working
in this field, for most people playing sports is just a hobby to pursue. Many of
them only watch or engage in sports with a view to release pressure and do
not take them as seriously as other parts of life. Another reason for people
disparaging sports is that sports have little or no impact on problems
besetting society, say, hunger and poverty. In other words, sports have a
negligible bearing on the development of a society.
However, there are stronger reasons to believe that sports are an
essential part in the development of society. Chief of these is that the
popularity of sports, namely, football and basketball assists business activities
in the form of advertising, which in turn make sports become a lucrative
industry. As a result, this provides employment opportunities for millions of
people, thus helping society develop economically. Moreover, holding sports
events acts as a way to maintain peace and solidarity between regions and
nations. To be specific, while in ancient civilizations, sports games were
organized to keep peace between rival communities and tribes, in today’s era,
international tournaments such as the World cup consistently succeed in
boosting ties and integration among countries across the globe.
In conclusion, I hold a firm belief that sports are one of the drivers
standing behind social enhancement.

for a host country or team to cover all the necessary costs, such as the construction
of facilities or providing hospitality to participants.

they have positioned themselves as an adventurous, youthful and exciting brand.
VIEW 2: NEGATIVE
- a risky financial investment – the endorsed athlete or team is disqualified, does not
participate or is associated with scandal, say, drug abuse – make sponsors suffer
financially + harm the reputation of companies – (in other words, the greater the
investment is, the greater the financial downfall becomes if anything goes wrong) in
the worse case – bankrupt or face consumer boycotts
IMPACTS ON SPORTS

- Advocating active lifestyles and providing entertainment, one of the main purposes
of sports competitions, can actually be undermined by sponsorship of companies
whose products are inconsistent with these goals. For example, if sugary or alcoholic
drinks are heavily advertised throughout a sports championship, this might convey
the wrong message to the audience, giving them the sense that those products are
positively associated with health and fitness. It is even more misleading when
performers are seen to use or consume those products during an event, which, in my
estimation, probably leads to their loyal fans doing the same. As a result, people
could lose interest and faith in both sports and their players. 
Nowadays, sports is a big business with high earnings for professional sports people
and companies involved both financially and in other ways. Is this a positive or
