SPACE TOURISM

TASK: Space travel has been possible for some time and many people believe
that space tourism could be developed in the future. Do you think it is a positive
or negative development?
Nowadays, space travel has been made possible thanks to the advancement
of technology and the proper investment of states. Therefore, some believe that
space tourism is no longer a pipe-dream. From my perspective, the effects of this
development are generally detrimental.
Admittedly, going deep into space brings about certain benefits to travelers.
Chief of these is that flying into outer space allows people to experience
weightlessness and admire the greatness of the universe. This is, definitely, an
extraordinary experience for individuals who desire to explore space. However, all
these precious experiences are achievable without actually making a trip into
space. By spending just a fraction of the price of a ticket into space, one can gain
exposure to a zero-gravity environment with some advanced recreational facilities
and virtual reality technologies. For instance, Mission: ISS, a VR game made with
the help of NASA, enables people to venture into space and see the surface of the
Moon without having to travel there.
Besides I believe that the disadvantages it has are far more pronounced.
First, exploration of space can potentially pose fatal risks as travelers are exposed
to a totally different and extreme environmental condition to Earth, hence many
unpredictable hazards can be caused. Once the accident arises, no rescue efforts
can be made due to the vast distance from the Earth. Second, space garbage in
the form of used-up fuel tanks or discarded parts of spaceships and emissions
from spacecraft would result in countless chunks of metal space debris flying
around the Earth. These space garbage can hinder any further attempt for space
research by hitting vital satellites and falling back into the Earth, causing
desperate harm to people and the natural habitats.
In conclusion, I hold a firm belief that while space tourism’s drawbacks are
too big for humans to handle, the benefit it offers is simply not justified.
TOPIC 27: RESEARCHING OTHER PLANETS
Task: In the future, it seems more difficult to live on the Earth. Some people think more
money should be spent on researching other planets to live on, such as Mars. To what
extent do you agree or disagree?
In the future, living on the Earth seems to be increasingly challenging. Many people
believe that larger investments should be made on planet research with a view to discovering
an alternative living space for human beings. In this essay, I will challenge this school of
thought.
Admittedly, it is true that it is getting more difficult to sustain human life on Earth. To
begin with, over the past few years, the process of global warming has passed the point where
it could be ever counteracted, which spells a disaster for all lives on Earth. This is the major
factor behind an increase in the frequency or severity of natural disasters, posing a serious
threat to humans. Another concerning problem is that overpopulation is placing a heavy burden
on the Earth’s natural resources. These sources are being exploited to the fullest to meet the
rising demand for land, water and food, thus causing humans to face severe scarcity of global
resources. Therefore, attempts to colonize other planets, such as Mars would be the key to the
survival of the entire human race.
However, this argument is not sound, considering the impracticality of such a venture
into space. First, as traveling into space is prohibitively expensive, building enough spaceships
to move a part of the human population to other planets is nearly an impossible task to be
done. Second, it seems to me that investing into space exploration would be unnecessary and
wasteful compared to making the Earth an inhabitable place for mankind. Several projects
conducted to address the energy crisis, or the root cause of global warming, have reported
substantial progress in exploiting solar power - a clean but previously perceived as an unstable
source of energy. More money being allocated for such innovative ideas would make the Earth
an ideal living environment for generations to come.
To conclude, I hold a firm belief that spending more budget on researching other plants
is unessential and impractical.
Some people believe that government spends too much money on space research while
there are still a lot of problems on the earth.
