Voltage and Frequency Adjustment

SMCS - 4490

The keys that are listed below are used for programming the EMCP 4 and are used for navigating
within the menu structure.

Reference: For a full explanation of the use of the keys, refer to the Systems Operation, "Electronic
Control Module (Generator Set)" section.

Adjustment
Use the following procedure in order to adjust the voltage and frequency of the generator output.

1. From the "MAIN MENU", use the down navigation key (22) or the up navigation key (19) in
order to navigate to the "CONTROL" menu. Press the "OK" key (21) in order to select the
"CONTROL" menu.

2. The "VOLTAGE" dialog will be displayed. Refer to Illustration 3.

3. Use the navigation keys to select "VOLT/Hz CONTROL". Press the "OK" key (21). The
"VOLT/Hz CONTROL" dialog will appear. Refer to Illustration 4.

Note: The small arrow below the bar indicates the value of voltage or speed relative to the
setpoint. Numerical values, along with percentages away from the setpoints, are also shown for
reference.

4. Press the "F2" key (4) in order to increase the generator voltage. Press the "F1" key (5) in order
to decrease the generator voltage.

If a CDVR is installed on the generator, the voltage can be controlled from the EMCP 4 in the
following manner:

◦ Over CAN data link

◦ Via digital outputs

◦ Via analog outputs

The speed can only be controlled if there is an ADEM on the engine.

5. Press the "F3" key (3) in order to decrease the engine speed. Press the "F4" key (2) in order to
increase the engine speed.

Note: When adjusting the voltage using the navigation keys, an offset is applied to the set point value
for "GENERATOR NOMINAL OUTPUT VOLTAGE". This set point is transmitted over the
Primary CAN data link to the CDVR voltage regulator. The set point is retained until battery power is
cycled to the EMCP 4. Cycling the battery power to the EMCP 4 will remove the offset. Once the
offset is removed, the transmitted value reverts to the set point value for "GENERATOR NOMINAL
OUTPUT VOLTAGE".

Note: The EMCP 4 will broadcast an engine speed bias based on the adjustment that is made. When
the control is in manual mode, the breaker is open, and the engine speed is adjusted, then that value
will remain until either the value is adjusted again or until the control is power cycled.

Note: Unlike the setpoints or preferences, for instance contrast, any changes to this screen take effect
immediately. The "OK" key and "Escape" key will not save or cancel changes.

Idle Speed and Rated Speed

The EMCP 4.3 and the EMCP 4.4 both receive a discrete input from the customer, and also allow a
selection on the screen or SCADA datalink for a customer to place the EMCP 4 into idle mode.

Note: The "Engine Forced Idle Feature Enable Status" parameter must be set to "Enabled" within Cat
ET prior to seeing this menu option on the display. This setpoint is under the "Automatic Start/Stop"
submenu in Cat ET.

If any signal is sending the generator set to Idle, the unit shall operate in idle. The EMCP 4 must also
be able to receive a signal from the ADEM governor when the ADEM is operating in idle mode and
switch the EMCP 4 to idle mode accordingly to disable protective relaying.

When the EMCP 4 is placed in idle mode, the EMCP 4 shall have the ability for a programmable
output(s) to be wired out to signal the system to operate in idle, along with sending via CAN 1
datalink any signals required for the ADEM governing system such as operating at a set speed via the
desired engine speed signal and also be able to send a discrete signal to the ADEM since the ADEM
may not be using CAN speed control.

If an Analog Output on the EMCP is sending the desired speed signal to the engine governor when
the programmable output gives an Idle command, the desired engine speed signal will not change on
the Analog Output when the Idle command is removed.

If the EMCP 4.4 is not operating with an ADEM governor, but is sending signals via analog output,
placing the EMCP 4 in idle mode shall not modify the desired speed signal, but the signal shall be
available via a programmable discrete output.

The engine speed can be toggled between the "LOW IDLE" and the "RATED SPEED" with the use
of the control display.

This feature must be enabled under "AUTO START/STOP"

3. The "IDLE/RATED" screen will be displayed. The current state will be displayed.

4. In order to change the state, press the "OK" key (21), then press the navigation keys in order to
select the desired value.

5. Press the "OK" key (21) in order to accept the change.
