ABSTRACT

Guruh Futhu Syurowo Study of Orangutan Nest at High Conservation Value Area of Oil
Palm Plantation of PT Telen District in East Kutai District of East Kalimantan (Supervised by
Yaya Rayadin and Albert L. Manurung).
Several oil palm plantation areas in East Kalimantan initially was built within
orangutan habitat area, therefore during palm oil plantation activities, several orangutans still
live in plantation area. Then, for the sake of biodiversity conservation at palm oil plantation
area, the company has determined HCV (High Conservation Value) in the palm oil plantation
functioned as a orangutan habitat. Thus, the present study is aimed at conducting study of
nest for orangutan as well as nest characteristic identification as well as orangutan nest
density in connection with the existence of orangutan at the HCV area at PT Telen Palm oil
plantation area. The method used was orangutan nest survey along the survey path (transect)
at 4 HCV areas of PT Telen. HCV areas of PT Telen in general have been built since 2007,
thus the present study will give a condition description of orangutan at HCV area after having
been built for 10 years. From the result of this study, it was shown that orangutan nest which
was mostly found is the tree type of Kijahe (Croton argyratus) with percentage of 19.7%
followed with Semecarpus sp. Type. (Forest manggo) 8 nests (12.1%) and Pterospermum
javanicum 7 nests (10.6%). From the class identification result of nest at ABKT location,
variation was found from every nest age class, ranging from A to E showing that HCV areas
of PT Telen are still used as nest by orangutan. Identification result of nest position
characteristics also shows that the highest percentage value of nest position is on the peak of
tree (23/45 nests, 51.11%). Meanwhile, the total number of nest per tree is one tree has one
nest (32/45, nest tree, 71.11%). The relationship between the height of the orangutan nest and
the height of the nest tree is closely related because most orangutans nest in the position of
the main branch. Therefore, the greater the height of the orangutan nesting tree, the higher the
main branching position in the tree. In general, it is shown that after these 10 years, the palm
oil plantation has just been found out to be built at HCV area, some potential nests of
orangutan were still found. This shows that orangutan still utilizes the HCV areas as their
shelter.
