SURGICAL SILK • Raw silk is a filament spun by the silkworm larva to

make its cocoon.

CHARACTERISTICS: Available in sizes from 5/0 to 0

Braided multifilament Non-absorbable suture.
Sterilisation: Gamma rays, Ethylene oxide and steam.
USES IN CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY:

✓ Performing transfixions of peripheral vessels

✓ As ligation of vascular structures.
✓ To repair vascular structures
✓ To separate the walls of cardiac cavities
✓ To repair or refer pericardium
✓ To perform tobacco pouching of large vessels in
adults
✓ To clamp perfusion lines and cannulae.

POLYPROPYLENE • Minimal tissue reaction, as it acts as an inert

material. This suture has double suture, this
facilitates the realization of the anastomosis.
CHARACTERISTICS: Presentation from 10/0 to 0 -
Monofilament - Non absorbable.
Sterilisation: ethylene oxide.
USE IN CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY:
✓ It is the ideal suture to perform anastomosis of
blood vessels and intracardiac
✓ repairs.
✓ Using autologous tissues or vascular substitutes
✓ For intracardiac defects (septal defects).
✓ For repairs of delicate heart valve leaflets.
✓ In case of valve replacement due to infective
endocarditis, polypropylene.
POLYESTER
CHARACTERISTICS: Multifilament braided - Calibres from
5/0 to 0
Sterilised in gamma rays, ethylene oxide, ethylene oxide.
USES IN CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY:
✓ To fix valves or prosthetic rings in cardiac
valvulopathies.
✓ There is a valve kit on the market; it is an envelope
consisting of 7 or 15
✓ strands, half of which are white and the other half
are green and/or blue,
✓ depending on the manufacturer, which are passed
alternately to the
✓ surgeon to guide him in the placement of the valve.

POLYGLYCOLIC AND LACTIC ACID These synthetic sutures, made of lactic and glycolic acid,
retain their tensile strength.
CHARACTERISTICS: Braided multifilament - Sizes from
5/0 to 0.
Sterilisation: ethylene oxide.
USES IN CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY:
✓ Approximation of pre-sternal aponeurosis tissue and
subcutaneous cellular tissue.
✓ Skin closure
✓ Pericardium closure
✓ Approximation of cardiac muscles in reduction
ventriculoplasty

POLYTETRAFLUOROETHYLENE (PTFE) It is the ideal suture for cardiovascular anastomosis.

CHARACTERISTICS: Monofilament - Calibres from 8/0 to
0
Sterilisation: ethylene oxide - Do not use radiation as it
affects the suture.
USES IN CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY
✓ Used for anastomosis between DACRON or PTFE
grafts and arterial or venous structures.
✓ In aortic dissection surgery with or without graft
interposition.
✓ In aortic surgery.
✓ In cardiovascular surgery

SURGICAL STAINLESS STEEL

Non-absorbable suture, made of stainless steel. (Surgical
wire) A suture for sternal
closure.
USES IN CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY.
✓ For sternal cerclage.
✓ Gauges from 6 to 1.
✓ Multifilament - monofilament

PACEMAKER WIRE

Polyethylene-coated wire devices, called temporary

cardiac pacing wire, are used.
Generates electrical impulses from the heart by
connecting to the pacemaker source when
the patient has a cardiac arrhythmia of some kind.
Available in adult and paediatric sizes

GORE TEX SUTURE MiIt is a microporous, non-absorbable monofilament

suture made of expanded
polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) and tissue tolerant. The
biocompatibility and
inertness of ePTFE (expanded polytetrafluoroethylene)
allows the suture to remain in
the environment for as long as two to four weeks.
Non-capillarity The monofilament GORE-TEX® suture is
not subject to the bacterial
wicking effect sometimes associated with multifilament
sutures.
FEATURES
✓ Low friction, soft, and flexible
✓ Allows superior handling
✓ Provide flexibility in positioning a square knot
PLEDGETS Teflon and/or polytetrafluoroethylene polymer, used for
the
reinforcement of surgical sutures and to support the
stitch.
