The poem ‘The Eagle’ by Alfred Lord Tennyson is not only about a

bird. As a reader it reminds us an absolutely powerful very tyrannic

and a dictatorial ruler with supreme power. Do you agree with the
above statement? Comment on it.
The Eagle is a poem written by the Englishman Alfred Lord Tennyson.
Tennyson lived during the Victorian Era and he was belonging to Romanticism.
Romantic poet believed that nature was beautiful and humans are the center
of nature. Tennyson’s ‘The Eagle’ clearly shows an emphasis on appreciating
nature.
The theme suggested in the poem is the majesty of nature. Man cannot usually
see the eagle because of the places that it chooses to build its nest. Most of
the time man can only imagine what the eagle’s movement and life are like.in
a way, the eagle symbolizes men who have power and authority. “in lonely
lands” can suggest the eagle’s lonely life as he lives high up in the air, which
ultimately suggest the eagle’s lonely life of famous, powerful people. The eagle
seems to be proud to be in the top of all which gives him the controlling
power.
The second stanza shows the action of the eagle. The first and second lines
further emphasize the idea that the eagle watches from the top, his high
throne, even the sea is below him. The final line suggest that the eagle makes a
grand plunge towards the sea. That action of the eagle suggests the sudden,
discontinuous action over his pray, which again symbolizes the exercising of
power by the powerful over the powerless. Thus, the eagle is portrayed as a
symbol of power.
Tennyson skillfully portrays a solitary bird in its original wild environment.at
the same time, he conveys a message about authenticity and boldness as
human qualities as well as stressing the importance of nature.by calling the
bird “he” throughout, the poet suggests a human. Tennyson also uses “hands”
instead of ‘claws. If we take into account the fact that this poem, by using
words to describe the eagle that are usually used for humans, makes
connection between eagle and human lives, we can assume that Tennyson is
telling us something about the human condition in the way the eagle has the
power to approach the sun but is held down by the earth. According to the
poem the eagle depicts the power and authority. Hence dictatorial ruler also
with a great power and authority and he is the person who controlling the
power as eagle. But the Tennyson tries to convince about the natural beauty
by the poem “The Eagle” by appreciating the bird eagle somewhat equal to a
dominant ruler. Whereas eagle is depicting as the symbol of power.
Tennyson’s “The Eagle” shows an emphasis on appreciating nature.it is a
nature poem praising the eagle’s beauty and power. Further, it has a deep
meaning. The poet suggests the destructive nature of the eagle too. Moreover,
this is a poem full of figurative language.
