Isotopes

Look at the models of 3 atoms in Fig. 1.

Figure 1. Models of 3 atoms. (“Isotopes”)

1. Fill in the blanks for the following table.

Number of Atom a Atom b Atom c

Proton 6 6 6
Neutron 6 7 8
Electron 6 6 6

(a) Identify the atoms. How do you know?

(b) State a similarity and a difference of the 3 atoms.

(c) The 3 atoms are known as isotopes. Define isotopes.

Atoms of the same element with

different number of neutrons

2. Most elements that commonly occur are made up of isotopes. For example, the
relative abundance of carbon isotopes is as follows.

The relative atomic mass of carbon is made up of the relative percentage abundance
of carbon isotopes.
3. Explain why the relative atomic mass of chlorine atoms is 35.5, given the percentage
abundance of the two chlorine isotopes are:

(0.75 x 35)+(0.25 x 37)

ion count of an element: #protons-#electrons
