CONTEMPORARY WORLD

The Contemporary World program is part of the Social Sciences. It deals with problems
and issues related to the environment, population, wealth, power, tensions and conflicts. As
responsible citizens, adult learn to participate in social debates and contribute to society.
Themes include democracy and human rights, nationalism and conditions of conflict and
stability, economic globalization, resource distribution and depletion, responsibilities of
international and transitional organizations, technological developments and environmental
concerns, cultural diversity and identity. Students interpret a contemporary world problem
associated with each of the themes studied. By interpreting these problems students learn to
recognize the interests of different actors and international power relations they have to take a
position. The aim of contemporary world program is to help adult learners become interested
in contemporary world problem issues that all societies face, develop competencies and
construct knowledge. They become aware of the role they must play in society and of their
responsibilities as citizens.
