Subject: Social Studies Grade Level: 4 grade
I. Topic & General Goal Maps: creating a map
II. Reference to PA or 7.1.4.A: Describe how common geographic tools are used to
Common Core organize and interpret information about people, places, and
Standards environment.

III. Lesson Objectives - The student will be able to create a map using five
components, a title, symbols, and a key.
IV. Materials - Map sheets
- Crayons/Colored Pencils
- My sample map
- Pencil
V. A. Introduction I will begin this lesson by asking students what they remember
about yesterday. They should answer that they remember that we
talked about different parts of a map. We will quickly review the
parts of a map.
B. Procedures 1. If students started the project the day before, I will tell them to
pull out their project from behind the social studies tab of their
portfolio. If we did not start the project, I will hand each of the
students a “Create a Map” worksheet. I will explain to them that
they will be creating their own map of their DREAM island.
They will need a title, 5 places on their map with corresponding
symbols, and a key. They can make their map a certain theme, or
they can just put places they like on the island. I will show them
my example. I will remind the students that they should start in
pencil if they mess up, and then use crayons after they have done
their pre-drawing. I will tell them that their final project should
be colorful and creative. I will answer any questions and then tell
the students they can begin. I will be around during the entire
project to assist and answer questions. The rest of the class will
be a work period for this project. If students need more time, they
can finish it during Activity Period or for morning work on
Monday. If students finish early, they can read an AR book
quietly.
C. Differentiation Product: This lesson’s product is differentiated because students
have a choice of what island they want to create and can add
whatever elements into their map that they desire.
Learning Environment: The classroom during this activity will be
very relaxed. I will allow the students to talk quietly if they
continue to work diligently. But students who work better in a
more relaxed and unstructured environment will thrive during
this lesson.
D. Closure I will conclude by asking students to share some of their maps
with the class. I will ask them to show me their five locations
with the corresponding symbols on the key. If students are not
done, they will finish during Activity Period or for morning
work.
VI. Assessment - The student will be able to create a map using five
components, a title, symbols, and a key.
Assessment: This will be assessed via the rubric when students
turn in their completed project. The rubric will help me to see
whether students included all of the parts, and understand what
components are included in a map. They will be assessed on their
five components, their symbols, key and their creativity.
VII. Modifications and/or Students with 504 plans will have the rubric that they can look at,
Accommodations to make sure they include all necessary parts of the project. They
will also be permitted to move around and stand as they work.
