Topic: Plastic Bags Ban

Introduction.

❖ Plastic bags, used for an uncountable number of purposes, whether is to transport

grocery items or even your dog's food. Though, talking about the utility of this creation

has had generated a handful of discussions than involves its advantages and

m
disadvantages, there are still people who doesn't consider those facts while paying 10

extra cents at the store in exchange of a plastic bag.

o.
❖ If we decide to introduce a little survey in this small classroom, to get an statistic of how
rs e
ou urc
many of us uses at least one single plastic bag a week, the probability of getting 100%

out of 100% its high. Which lead us to the next question, why do we rather using those

kind of bags rather than just making use of the canvas ones? Regardless your answer,
vi y re

today we would like to present some pros and cons towards this topic with our single
ed d

purpose of letting you know that pollution is not a joke.

First Point (Pro Plastic Bags Ban)

is

➢ Among all states of USA, in August 2014, California became the first state to enact
Th

legislation imposing a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags at large retail stores

(NCSL, 2018, pp. 4). After the impose of this new law, good outcomes started to emerge.
sh

For example, in 2017, the California Coastal Commission presented a study describing

the amount of garbage collected in clean-up efforts on California beaches on one day.

The resulting data demonstrated that the number of plastic bags collected in 2017 had

decreased more than 50% as compared to statistics from 2010 ( TCAG, 2018, pp 1).

Second Point (Pro Plastic Bags Ban)

➢ The plastic bag ban in California protects the environment. With the reduction of plastic

bags consumption as result of the ban, California has demonstrated its concern towards

the environmental consequences the use of plastic creates.

➢ Plastic bags are among the 12 items of debris found most often in coastal cleanups,

according to the nonprofit Center for Marine Conservation. Marine mammals, seabirds,

and sea turtles can become entangled in the bags, and sea turtles can mistake them for

m

food such as jellyfish, then die from starvation resulting from intestinal blockage (Spivey,

Angela, 2003, pp 6)

Third Point (Pro Plastic Bags Ban)
ou urc
➢ Why plastic bags ban is the one of best options to in order to protect our nature? Even
o

though most plastic bags are recyclable, most of them are not recycled. It can be seen as
aC s
vi y re

a puzzle, as the rate of plastic bags recycle increases, the consumption of them far

outpace that rate.

➢ Plastic does not biodegrade in a meaningful if even comprehensible timeframe. Thus,

some portion of it accumulates in the environment. The more we produce, consume,

is

and recycle plastics, the more plastic will come into the world and accumulate in
Th

landfills, on land, in rivers, and the sea. Plastics at sea concentrate incredibly dangerous
sh

chemicals, fish eat plastic, and we eat fish (Wilson, Stiv, 2011, pp. 4)

➢ Throughout our society, the rate of plastic pollution in general has been increasing

notably, due excess of consumption and lack of understanding for most people, that's

why David Suzuki explains “ Outright bans on plastic bags may not be the best solution,

but education and incentives to get people to stop using them are necessary.”
