National Botanical garden of Godawari is the one of the largest

botanical garden of Nepal, which harbors 883 species of
Angiosperms, 26 species of Gymnosperms and 91 species of
Pteridophytes out of which 453 plant species are conserved by in-situ
conservation method and 557 species by ex-situ conservation
methods. Besides it other 11 botanical garden are too present in
Nepal other 8 districts (Ministry of Forests and Environment)
Botanical gardens devote their resources to the study and
conservation of plants, as well as making the world's plant species
diversity known to the public. In same manner the botanical garden
has been performing its’ task.

The roles of botanical garden in conservation of species are as

follows:

 Establishment and maintenance of the facilities for ex-situ

conservation and research of endemic, rare, endangered,
threatened and useful plants,
 Safeguard those populations of plant species which are in
danger of genetic deterioration;
 Adopt measures for the recovery and rehabilitation of the
threatened species and their introduction into their natural
habitats
 Rescue, collection and conservation of specially rare,
endangered and threatened plant species,
 Study and research on useful plant resources,
Moreover the major programs implemented in the botanical
gardens of Nepal are plant study and research program; herbs
development program, plant conservation and garden development
program and President Chure-Terai Madhesh program. Collection and
conservation of germ plasm of endemic, rare, endangered, threatened
and other useful plants has been a great achievement in botanical
garden in Nepal (For example: In National Botanical Garden (NBG)
Godavari, Lalitpur ex-situ conserved endemic plant is Hypericum
cordifolium; Rare plant is Alstonia scholaris and endangered plant is
Podocarpus neriifolius. Similarly, among 860 total plant species
conserved in NBG 395 plant species are ex-situ conserved. These ex-
situ conserved plant species includes endemic, rare, endangered,
threatened, medicinal and other useful plant species.
