ART BY : B .V DOSHI
•The premise here was to establish
a network which is based on the man
as the measure such that nobody is
more than 250 m from a bus stop.
VIDHYADAR NAGAR :
CONCEPT •Main influences on Doshi’s design:

o His plan crossbred aspects of le-
Corbusier with aspects of old Jaipur.
o
o Powerful types based on different
spiritual and intellectual ideals.
VIDHYADAR NAGAR
STRATEGIES FOR THE DESIGN
A new city transcending the urbanism of
Le Corbusier in an attempt to recreate
the ordering principles
that made Jaipur,
which is derived from
the old city Harappa and
vastu shastra.
PROJECT PURPOSE AND UNDERLYING ISSUES
• In the 1980s, B.V. Doshi was commissioned to plan a vast new township named Vidhya Dhar Nagar,
situated in the northwest of the walled city.

•Incidentally in 1978 due to deforestation there were flash floods and the north-eastern boundary of the
site all of a sudden became a deep ravine several hundred feet wide. This implied intervention of larger
forces, forces of nature at work. Hence the fundamental premise was to develop this project as an energy-
conscious city that is in-built with resilience to the greater forces of nature.

• The determinants were recognised as the climate, that is the sun, the moon, the water, the city
gates and more importantly the Vastu Purusha mandala which would balance the whole
ecosystem concerning man and the environment.

•These issues were incorporated, by harvesting and recycling waste as well as natural resources, to
reforest the hills. Therefore all the water used by more than 100,000 inhabitants of Vidhya Dhar Nagar
was to be collected at the sewage plant and treated to green the hill range and also green the city itself. An
estimate showed the daily availability of 6.5 million litres of water for recycling. If half of the water is given
to the villages in the area, the employment opportunities could be enhanced and the forests revitalised.

LOCATION OF

VIDHYADAR

NAGAR
For many years B.V. Doshi argued in favor of
smaller, regional urban units so as to stem the
economic demise of the country side and stop the
flow of people into the biggest cities. He has tried to
PLANNING synthesize the best of modern planning with the
wisdom of traditional settlements.
OF VIDHYADAR NAGAR

Vidhyadar nagar is projected as a satellite town in

the city of Jaipur.

He called it an energy conscious plan because it tries

to be less wasteful of natural resources, fuel and
even human effort than the usual development.

The perimeter is square and there is a main axis

running north-east to south-west, crossed by a
secondary axis along the main transversal road.
SKETCHES
BY ARCHITECT DOSHI
• Orientation is determined by the
path of the sun so as to minimize
ORIENTATION
solar contact with built surfaces. OF VIDHYADAR NAGAR
•Vidhyadar Nagar is broken down
into sectors and the road pattern is
designed to infiltrate traffic gradually.

•Each area has its own character and

quality of enclosure.

•Buildings do not exceed four storeys

and the tallest face into larger roads.

•Doshi has interpreted the lessons of

traditional desert towns with their
tight clusters, courtyards, Havelis and
lanes of transition from public to
private space.
ORIENTATION OF
VIDHYADAR NAGAR

And also he has incorporated certain areas from the

modern town planning tradition.

•The streets work in the hierarchy: broad avenues there

is a harmonious relationship between built form and
open spaces.

•His plans give detailed guidelines for the dispositions,

plans, sections and even facades of individual
structures.

The geometry of plan relies upon mandala form.
