Lesson 1: What is Philosophy?

Please read page one. In the quote and in the first paragraph we will find the term
“question”. We have to emphasize the word question because it is very important
in philosophy. Take note that in Philosophy questions are more important than
answers. If you want answers, then you have to not just ask questions , but the
right questions.

Notice that when we keep on asking questions, our mind keeps working to
uncover the reasons or the causes why things exist or why certain events are
happening in our society or why we experience certain things.
The more we question, the more we gain wisdom and knowledge.

For example, why do trolls attack only those who are against the President.?
Why does COVID keep on spreading in our respective towns? Why do you need
to take up Philosophy?

Asking the right questions also opens up our minds to the right methods of
studying and dealing with those questions. As a result, we learn to think in a
methodical and systematic manner. When this happens, that means we learn to
do philosophy.

Remember that simply thinking without understanding if does it right is different

from thinking straight, or, shall we say correctly. Secondly, since we gain deeper
knowledge and wisdom when we ask questions, the freer we become. When we
gain a better understanding of the things that are happening around us, how they
are affecting us and how we can affect them as well, our horizons with regard to
the many ways by which we could make our existence as well as the existence of
others to flourish become significantly greater.

Thirdly, when we do Philosophy we do not only gain more knowledge and

become freer, but we become better persons as well. Doing Philosophy and the
art of questioning make us more humane, that is, a more genuine and a more
beautiful person. Hindi sinungaling, hindi magnanakaw, at hindi mamamatay tao.
