Lesson2: Historical Foundation of Education

Activity No.6

1.Why was the focus of education different for different groups of people in different places and
at different periods in world history?

Answer: The focus of education then at different times and in other parts of the world
indicates that people then had their ways to live and have enough knowledge to survive.
The focus of education has evolved over time. It differs more depending on whether you
take the view of society, the parents, or an educator. Society had different impacts on
education; initially, the school was driven by religious interests; eventually, it became more
about government or political interest. Now it is in most cases about ensuring our people
have an advantage on the world stage. Parents initially used education as child-care as they
moved off farms and into the industrial work environment. Then it was about capability
teaching providing skills and abilities that would serve them in later life. In more recent
times, education has become the tool used to prepare them for the workforce's competitive
nature. Lastly, Educators used to work on a principle severity at all times, as they imposed
a set of standards and behaviors on children. Then it evolved in the focus of imprinting
individual disciplines onto a child's brain. The future of education now is what the great
teachers have aspired to throughout the ages - to inspire children to learn and use their
talents. Thus the focus of education at different periods in world history varies in survival,
stability and convenience.

2. What does this point regarding the relationship between schools and society?

Answer: The school reflects the society, and society reflects the schools. The linkage
contains a dynamic for improving a lot of education. Education is part and parcel of those
schools in which it is offered and the society that gave it birth. In interacting with society,
one alters its culture and, in the process, changes the destiny.
2.Give the different charactertistics of the different periods in the Philippine history, what were
the goals of education/schools during the: (in tabular form)

The History of Philippine Educational System

Different periods in the Educational Goals

Philippine History
Pre-colonial Period Prepared to become a good husbands and wives (good
parenthood).
Spanish Era To cultivate civic responsibility for the authoritarian and a
religious commitment to roman catholic beliefs, to
separate the boy from girls in school and to accommodate
wealthy Filipinos or Ilustrados
American Regime To promote democratic ideals and a democratic way of
life and establish a free and compulsory elementary
education system.
The Commonwealth Period To provide free education in public schools all over the
country; to establish vocational education and some
household activities; to emphasize nationalism; to teach
students a good manner and proper discipline, and to
designate Tagalog as our National Language.
Japanese Occupation To make people understand the position of the Philippines
as a member of the East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere; to
eradicate the idea of reliance upon the Western States;
particularly the US and Great Britain; to foster a new
Filipino culture based on the consciousness of the people
as Orientals; to elevate the morale of the people giving up
over-emphasis on materialism; to diffuse elementary
education and to promote vocational education; to strive
the diffusion of the Japanese language in the Philippines
and to terminate the use of English language in schools;
and to develop people in the low of labor.
Post –colonial period To aim a full of realization of the democratic ideals and
way of life; to make a permanent Civil Service Eligibility
for teachers; to conduct a daily flag ceremony and sing
national Anthem in all schools; to include in curriculum
the life, the works, and writings of Jose Rizal; to
nationalize elementary education; to abolish matriculation
fees and to pass Mange Carte for Teachers.
3.DepEd’s mission is “protect and promote the right of every Filipino to quality, equitable,
culture’based, and complete basic education.” Has the Philippine educational system from pre-
colonial to present given equal access to quality, culture-based, and complete basic education?
Or was it a privilage of a few? Explain your answer.

Answer: For me, the education system back then did not give Filipinos an equal
opportunity to quality, culture-based, and complete basic education. If we look at the
various periods of the evolution of education in the Philippines, we will see that there are
times when our ancestors were forbidden to enjoy the beliefs and practices. Instead, they
follow their culture or faith that our ancestors experienced bitterness in life, no freedom to
do what they want. In the Spanish era, it was stated there, that only wealthy Filipinos or
Ilustrados could attend school. In that way, the Philippines' wealthy residents were the only
ones that were able to study. To sum up, if we are to talk about the present Philippine
educational system, I would agree that it somehow gives Filipinos equal access to quality,
culture-based, and complete basic education. However, if we are to include that from the
pre-colonial period, I would point out that it did not as only wealthy people are
accommodated while the less fortunate ones are mostly left behind.
