Exercise
Answer the following questions on the spaces provided.

1. Fill in the blanks with the correct words.

a. All physical quantities consist of a numerical value and unit

b. A derived unit is made up of one or more SI units.
c. We use prefixes to indicate multiples of units.

2. Fill in the table below.

Base Quantity Name of Unit Symbol of Unit

Length metre m
Mass kilogram kg
Time Electric second s
Current ampere A
Temperature kelvin K
Amount of substance mole mol
Luminous Intensity candela cd

3. Convert the following values to the indicated units

(a) 330mA = 0.33 A
(b) 6.3km = 6,300 m
(c) 2MJ = 2, 000, 000 J
(d) 18mg = 0.018 g
(e) 2000g = 2 kg
(f) 18km = 18,000 m

4. An electric current measures 2 milli-amperes. What is the current in kilo-amperes?

Milli-ampere is a lot smaller than kilo-ampere, therefore we should divide. First, we
convert milli-ampere to ampere by dividing it to 1000, the result will be 0.002 A. Second step is
to convert ampere to kilo-ampere by dividing it to 1000, the result will be 0.000002 kA. In a
scientific notation, the answer will be 2.0 x 10−6 k A .
