Example
A descriptive grammar might include ‘He goes...', meaning ‘He said'.
In the classroom
Learners can be encouraged to move away from a prescriptive approach to
grammar by using a guided discovery, or inductive, approach, in which they
look for examples of variations in use in authentic texts. These examples can
be compared to prescriptive rules in order to decide if they are useful or not.
Of course, descriptive grammar has also advantages. The first is descriptive
grammar approach improves non-native speakers’ pronunciation and helps
them sound like native speakers. One of the best examples of this is a Call
center agent when they speak, they sound like a native speaker but when
you analyze their grammar you will notice that it is not correct or in a simple
explanation it is grammatically error.
The second is descriptive grammar approach helps language learners
understand the applied usage of language and communicate better with
native speakers. It is very common here in the Philippines that we use
descriptive grammar when were in High School I’m not saying that all
teachers or learners used descriptive grammar.
If I will choose between prescriptive and descriptive grammar, I will pick the
prescriptive since it is more useful than descriptive. It is very efficient if we
use the accurate grammar. It would be very helpful if were going to practice
the usage of grammar.
