Quarter 1 Decoding the Secrets of
Module 1 Better Study Habits
Learning Objectives

At the end of the session, you are expected to be able to:

1. describe the importance of developing study habits;

2. justify the value of study habits designed as a tool in achieving optimum learning in school; and
3. realize your effective and ineffective study habits.

Introduction

This is your last year in Junior High School and by now, you can already observe how you
have been studying for the past three years. You have already developed certain patterns to accomplish the
school tasks and requirements including your exams, projects, paper works, and many more. This module
entails you to check how you have been doing your study habits and classify them as effective and ineffective
based on your own experiences and practices. Let’s start our journey!

Keep in Mind

Break free from your Faulty Study Habits

Being a student for almost nine to ten years, you must have formed a habit of studying your lessons
and accomplishing the school tasks to pass each grade level. Along the way, you got to test what works for
you and what’s not. You need to be mindful of those patterns that bring you to your academic goals for the
school year while trying to get rid of those proven to be bad for your school performance. Hence, we want to
bring to your attention the faulty study habits that you might still have in the hope of changing them with a
helpful one.

1. Studying for the sake of doing it. When was the last time you asked yourself, “Why I am studying?”
What do I intend to gain from it? Good grades? A good job later? Personal fulfillment? Or acceptance in
college? You have to clarify your intention or even your motivation because if you cannot see the point in
studying, it will only make it boring and tedious. If your intention is clear, then studying can be meaningful
for you.

In times of crisis like the Covid-1 pandemic where you have to stay at home, you may find it difficult
to study given the circumstances of doing household chores or being surrounded by siblings who are playing
or watching television. Bear in mind that the only way to form a study habit in times of pandemic is to study,
study, a study despite temptations to play, watch television, storytelling, or getting busy with gadgets.

2. Studying by impulse. Have you experienced doing your homework, reviewing for an exam, and
doing your project without analyzing how they should be prioritized and scheduled? If so, then, you must have
felt overwhelmed, stressed, or anxious about how to do it all at the same time. It may be a result of a lack of
careful planning and assessment of your tasks to do. It would help if you try to enumerate the things to do,
rank them according to the date of submissions or even the time needed to do it. You may also account for
other considerations to strategically sequence your activities. Keep in mind that the clearer your study plan is,
the more chances of accomplishing it well without feeling too much anxiety.

3. Studying long but still unproductive. You need to be mindful of what time of the day you mind
works well and very receptive to learn. Try to notice yourself when you are at your best reviewing and in
doing your project, among other activities, while also considering the other things like physical set up,
deadlines, and health condition.

3
4. Organizing all requirements and tasks before you start doing them. As a Junior High School
learner, you have a lot of subjects to take. Naturally, your teachers will give you assignments, projects, paper
works, exams, and many more. If you let those things pile up, you are creating a gigantic opponent that will
soon knock you out. Once the tasks are given to you, include them in your calendar as part of your schedule
on a particular day. In this way, you are doing it piecemeal which prevents you from harboring a fear of
failing the subjects.

5. Dismissing things that you don’t understand. There are times that teachers ask you, “Do you have
any questions, class?” and everyone would say “None.” The truth of the matter is, it’s either they just want to
end the lesson and do something else or they got the lessons. However, there are times that test scores say
otherwise. Because you missed that opportunity to clarify or unlock your difficulty, it resulted in a failing
score. You have to be particular about the things that you don’t understand in a lesson and have the initiative
to deal with it with your teacher during or even after classes. Asking help from your high performing
classmates would also facilitate your comprehension.

6. Having random notes and confusing learning space. Have you experienced writing notes on a
random paper or notebook? It is not a good practice for someone who wants their thoughts organized. It will
give you difficulties to retrieve your lessons and add up to your tasks. Delegating a certain folder or notebook
for each subject will make you segregate and organize the lessons well. It is also important to take notes of
the modules/ learning kits as you read. Your notes will help you remember the good points you may need
during examinations. Without notes, you will need to re-read and review the entire module before the test.
Your notes will help you save time and easily recall the main points.

7. Having a crunch time for the exams the next day. You might have experienced trying to absorb all
the lessons for a long test or even an important performance task the next day. It’s like you are getting food
that is hard to chew. Making it tidbits by setting time to concentrate and focus on certain parts of the test
coverage would make your life easier. It pays to be organized and disciplined in carrying out these things.

8. Multi-tasking while studying. It’s typical nowadays for some learners like you to go online on social
media, watch TV or even listen to music while studying. For some, they claim that it works for them but it
prevents them from being 100% focused. Try to remove distractions from your study area and be mindful of
what you’re doing. You will get to appreciate the details, and even the areas for improvement if you are doing
a school project or readings. You will also easily understand the concepts and ideas of the lessons if you turn
off your TV, music, social media, or anything that distracts you.

9. Repeating the ineffective study habits and mistakes. If you already know that certain actions or
behavior do not help you to get good grades, why still do it in Grade 10? By now, you can project how the
patterns of your action lead you to a certain result. You have to make use of those insights and avoid putting
yourself in a problematic situation. Hence, the courage and willingness to break those ineffective study habits
and upgrade the effective ones.

You Can Do It!

Suggested Time Allotment: 15 Minutes

Based on the discussion, identify the ineffective or faulty study habits that you have and suggest ways
on how you can change them that are doable on your part.

Quarter 1 Discovering the Road to Self-Discipline
Module 2

Learning Objectives

At the end of the session, you are expected to be able to:

1. examine the importance of your role as part of the family and community;
2. demonstrate personal discipline in managing family and community concerns effectively; and
3. determine ways on how you manage personal changes toward self-appreciation.

Introduction

This module aims to help you discover self-discipline and its relevance to your role as an
adolescent. Self-discipline and awareness of your role in the family and community will help you achieve
your personal goals and maintain healthy relationships.

Keep in Mind

As you mature, you will realize that along with your changes, there are also changes in your
role in the family and the community. As an adolescent, you can already demonstrate personal discipline in
managing your personal, family, and community concerns. These include life skills development, the
establishment of healthy relationships, and becoming a productive citizen.

Being responsible during this critical time would benefit not just yourself but also your family and
community. This pandemic challenges everyone to perform their respective roles even if it would entail
greater sacrifices. In performing your role, you must develop self-discipline. Here are some tips that you can
follow to achieve self-discipline:

1. Know and acknowledge your weaknesses.

Change starts by identifying your weaknesses. Be humble enough to own them and do
something to start improving yourself. It may not be easy but it’s worth a try.

2. Keep clear goals and have an action plan.

Be specific about what you want to achieve. Your goal will serve as your guide in planning
your actions. Having a clear goal would mean a better action plan and efficient use of time, resources,
and energy.

3. Commit to developing self-discipline.

Deciding to achieve a certain level of self-discipline is never easy. Discipline would mean
doing things whether you like it or not. It means doing the right things at all cost which oftentimes
gives discomforts that may drive you away from doing it. You need to commit to exercise self-
discipline at all times.

4. Learn to avoid destructions.

One of the effective ways of avoiding destructions is not exposing yourself to it. Surround
yourself with things that you plan to accomplish. When you are trying to avoid excessive exposures to
anything that disturbs you, try to remove them from your reach for a while like a gadget, radio,
television, etc. You may also try other strategies that you think will help you.

5. Create simple and doable routines.

Creating simple and doable routines will help you in developing self-discipline. For example,
if you have problems with being on time for your scheduled classes, it is necessary to know the root

5
cause of the problem. You can adjust your bedtime and other activities and allocate ample time for
your sleep and other preparations.

6. Create a Back-up Plan.

Having a Plan A, B or C will help you in managing setbacks or failures. Not being able to
achieve your goal at a specific time may be frustrating but these back-up plans will give you a better
opportunity to re-plan and strategize your next steps.

Today is a great opportunity to show your family and community that you are disciplined and you can
assume responsibilities that go with the role that you play as a maturing individual. Remember, this is a life-
long process and you will be amazed at the possibilities that you can achieve as you grow up.

Quarter 1 I, You, and We:

Module 3 Respecting Similarities and Differences

Learning Objectives

At the end of the session, you are expected to be able to:

1. recognize the different duties of your family members that strengthen harmonious relationships;
2. demonstrate ways of showing respect and strengthening the relationship with others despite
differences in beliefs, culture, and values; and
3. value the importance of respecting similarities and differences with others.

Introduction

In this module, you will realize that living in harmony with others requires showing respect
despite similarities and differences. Our golden rule “Do not do unto others, what you do not want them to do
unto you” was repeatedly taught to strengthen its impact and be a seamless part of you. This principle is a
powerful reminder for you to treat others better just like how you wanted to be treated.

6
As you go through life, you will be confronted with the challenges of interacting and working with
other people with similar and different views, beliefs, cultures and values from you. Understanding and
respecting individual differences will help you recognize the importance of diversity and strengthen your
interpersonal relationships.

Keep in Mind

The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that
each individual is unique, and recognizing individual differences.

You might have known that there are no two people alike, but it is in our differences that we
complement each other. It is like your body that is composed of different parts but all are important as they all
serve you in different ways. You might have preferred to be a friend to someone a lot similar to you or those
who are different from you for some personal reasons or preferences. We were born from different races, we
were raised from different families of varying cultures, and we all have equal rights and privileges, of who we
want to be or how we want to live, which might explain our similarities or differences.

As people inhabiting just one world, we are encouraged to live in harmony with everyone. We can
only possibly do it if we will always show respect for others amidst our similarities and differences to achieve
more meaningful relations with them. Here are a few ways that you can do it:

1. Begin with an open mind. Be willing to hear and learn about others’ views, beliefs, culture, or
values. This allows you to establish a connection with others and have a wider understanding of the
world in which we live.
2. Accept others for who they are. Acceptance is the ability to see that others have a right to be their
unique persons. This will help you develop empathy, a skill that will help you to better understand
those who are different from you.
3. Value the differences. Appreciating our similarities and differences is vital in creating a community
that is united amidst diversity. Remember, our differences are what make us unique and special.
Together, we can do so much when our abilities are combined.
4. Listen closely. Focus on what others are saying and sharing. Pay attention to their emotions and try to
understand where they’re coming from. We learn when we listen to one another.
5. Seek understanding. Instead of questioning the validity of the other person’s opinions or beliefs, ask
questions, and be curious. Genuinely try to understand others and make them feel respected.

One of the best things about the world we live in is being surrounded by different people. Instead of
emphasizing our differences, embrace them, be respectful of them, and use the experience to learn and grow
as a person.

Strengthening Relationships amidst Diversity

Accepting and understanding the people around you amidst your similarities and differences shows
how you appreciate and value them in your lives. Making them feel that you respect them will strengthen your
relationship with them.

In the table, think of five significant people around you (family, friends, etc.) who made a positive
impact in your life despite having different views, interests, cultures, or values. Then, share ways of showing
respect amidst diversity that strengthen your relationship. An example is provided below to serve as your

Quarter 1 My Career Influencers

Module 4
Learning Objectives

At the end of the session, you are expected to be able to:

1. identify the influence of personal interest, family, peers, media, and socio-economic status in your
future career selection;

8
2. demonstrate proper use of career-related information from multiple media sources; and
3. appreciate how gender, family, peers, and socio-economic status affect your decision to choose a
future career or profession.

Introduction

Choosing a career is one of the major issues you need to face. It involves an interaction of
many factors which are quite complex. It is not a one-time-shot task and it takes a process before arriving at a
final career decision. Career choice preparedness creates confidence in career decision-making.

This module will help you identify and appreciate the influence of the different factors in choosing
your career. It will also provide different sources of information that are deemed essential in making an
informed choice.

Keep in Mind

You might have already observed that more than once in your life, you dreamt of a certain
career then changed into another. As you encounter people from different professions, it is normal to
assimilate and somehow dream to become like in the future. Having a change of mind is a normal part of the
career decision-making process. It happens when you start to become fully aware of yourself in terms of
strengths, weaknesses, hobbies, abilities, and many more aspects. It includes factors such as interests, family,
peers, media, and socio-economic status. These factors influence your decision in making a more realistic and
viable career choice. It is important to recognize the role they play and the extent to which they should
influence your decisions.

Your interests in a certain field is a springboard to your exploration. It directs you to gather
information and details that develop and nurture more your inclination. Furthermore, your prior knowledge
prepares you for the requirements of obtaining such a career.

Your family also has a strong influence on any decision you make. Your exposure to them and the
manner they support you to pursue whatever path you take affect your decision in many manners. This gives
confidence in your ability to explore and select a career path that may or may not be what your family
influence you to become.

Aside from your family, you may be spending much of your time with your peers. Adolescence is a
period when you start spending quality time with friends and classmates, influencing you in many matters.
One such influence is with career choice. They play an important role in aiding you or impeding your
decisions in becoming what you truly want. Sometimes, teenagers is strong that it becomes a deciding factor
for them to continue as a group. This may become worrisome for adolescents who do not consider factors
other than peer influence. However, some also see this as a good influence especially when peers generally
consider support to individual dreams.

Consequently, multiple sources of Career-Related Information is of utmost importance in the process

of career decision-making. These can be found on career websites, government and private agencies, and
school advocacy programs that can guide you in your career decisions. You can view the link provided to be
informed on the in-demand, hard-to-fill jobs, the emerging industries, and other information that will help you
