FIRENZE
OLTRARNO

THE KEYS
OF ACCESSIBILITY
Florence is a world heritage site and as such it must be accessible to all,
without exclusion.

Florence welcomes people with physical disabilities due to an abundance of

pedestrian areas and accessible historical and artistic sites. It is also unde-
niable that some routes of the city-center - similar to many other historical
cities throughout the world - may present some difficulties for people
using wheelchairs: for example narrow streets, tiny sidewalks that are not
easily passable or not homogeneous pavement. To address this problem
and provide information on which paths are the best to follow for people
with physical disabilities, the Municipality of Florence in collaboration with
Kinoa Srl have designed and published this Guide.

The PASSEPARTOUR project is made up of four volumes, each

describing four different tourist itineraries "without barriers". In addition,
the guide provides a map of the historical city-center, highlighting all the
areas that can be navigated with complete autonomy, or with the support
of a helper.
In addition, Kinoa has developed the navigation app Kimap, which acts
as a companion tool to the guide for the mobility of disabled people.
Kimap can be downloaded for free on every smartphone: the app shows
the most accessible path to reach your desired destination and is
constantly updated.

We hope that this project will contribute to improve the tourist experi-
ence for those visiting our marvellous City, opening the doors to its
extraordinary heritage.

Cecilia Del Re
Councilor for Tourism of the City of Florence
What is Passepartour,
the keys to accessibility
Will I be able to enter this museum with my wheelchair? Which route should I take to get to this church or
restaurant? Where can I find the services I need? These are the questions that we want to answer here.

Created using the Kimap technology, which allows to trace the most accessible route and map
the accessibility of points of interest and services, Passepartour shows to tourists on wheelchairs
or electric scooters the easiest itinerary to follow to reach the main Florentine tourist attractions,
providing also the location of accessible services. With the creation and constant updating of this
guide, Kinoa srl, developer of the Kimap technology, intends to offer an essential service to re-
duce the information barriers to accessibility and to develop a tourism truly “for all” in Florence.
Download the navigator for the mobility of motor disabled people.

Oltrarno

The present itinerary brings you to the “Oltrarno”, the part of Florence located on the
southern bank of the river Arno. The itinerary is divided into two routes that allow you to
fully appreciate the historical treasures of the area and and the surrounding landscape.
The first route stretches along the route Piazza del Carmine - Santo Spirito - Palazzo
Pitti (where it links up with the “Classic” itinerary) - Boboli Gardens and finally Forte
Belvedere. The second routed departs from Ponte Vecchio, passing by the San Niccolò
Tower and then climbing up to Piazzale Michelangelo and the Church of San Miniato
al Monte.
The route measure 4.6 km, with uphills that are sometimes challenging but accessi-
ble by electric powered wheelchairs and scooters (for the second route there are also
indications for using public transport). The entire itinerary is described in a series of
detailed maps of the streets with the best accessibility conditions. The texts provide
some descriptions and tourist information, describing also the accessibility level of the
points of interest along the way.

The entrance ticket for disabled people and their companions is free in all the points of
interest indicated in the guide.

The frescoes of this chapel - commissioned in 1424 by Felice Brancacci, a wealthy
Florentine merchant - represent one of the most outstanding examples of Italian
painting. The famous scenes of the “Expulsion from Paradise” and the “Payment of
the Tribute” were depicted by Masaccio (around 1425) in a new and revolutionary Re- Mu

naissance style. The set of paintings, revolving around the life of St. Peter, were started
by Masolino, master of Masaccio, in Late Gothic style.

Giardino di Boboli FORTE B

(Ingresso /Entry)

A true hidden treasure of the Oltrarno is the Church of San Felice. The small
building overlooks the square bearing the same name where it stands the column
commissioned by Cosimo 1st to celebrate the victory in the Battle of Marciano.
Museo 47
delle Porcellane
The church is among the oldest religious buildings in Florence and its origins are
lost in time. In 1153 it passed under the control of the Benedictine monks of San
Silvestro di Nonantola until the beginning of the 15th. The magnificent wooden
crucifix, crafted by Giotto’s apprentices, is located above the main altar and it
ino di Boboli dates back to the Benedictine period. From 1400 to 1575 the Camaldolesi monks

tasked Michelozzo with the construction

When the Dominican nuns took over from the Camaldolesi, a new sacristy
and a raised choir were built in the church, supported by eight columns in or-
der to create a private space for the nuns, inaccessible to external visitors.
During the Nazi occupation of Florence the building was secretly transformed into
a base for resistance members and a safe refuge for displaced people and perse-
cuted Jews.

This detached section of the Natural History Museum of Florence is located in

the Torrigiani palace, in Via Romana 17. Here one can find various scientific collec-

history. The term “Specola” comes from the observatory built by the Grand Duke
Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine on the roof of the same building. The museum is or-
ganized in three sections: Zoology, Ceroplastica, Mineralogy and Lithology.

In the Zoology section one can find a large number of stuffed animals (including

animals, as well as an extremely widev.selection
M a d o n insects.

The Ceroplastica section contains the extraordinary anatomical waxes made be-
tween the end of the 17th and the mid 19th century by famous wax modellers
(Gaetano Zumbo, Clemente Susini and others) appreciated throughout the world
for the exceptional quality and their realism. The Mineralogy section, with over
50,000 copies, offers the opportunity to make an exciting journey around the
world of minerals and rocks, but also in the extraterrestrial world, thanks to a won-
derful collection of meteorites.

From 1st September 2019 the museum will be closed, for about 18 months, for
restoration work.

On the hill behind Palazzo Pitti there is the wonderful Boboli Garden. The Medici
family was the responsible for its creation and further expansion, relying on the
architect Niccolò Tribolo, who created Pacemodel for the so-called “Italian-style
llathe
M a d o nna de
Garden”, which later would vbe
. taken as an example by many European dynasties.
The wide green surface organized and structured in a very precise way, constitutes
a true open-air museum, populated by marvellous statues, decorated with artificial
caves (like the famous one by Bernardo Buontalenti), monumental fountains, such
as those of the Ocean (by Giambologna) and of Neptune.

After the Medici, the Lorraine and Savoy dynasties further enriched the structure,
according to the tastes and styles of their time.

An example of this are the naturally terraced area with the eighteenth century pa-
vilion hosting the Kaffeehaus, a rare example of rococo architecture in Tuscany, or
the Lemon tree garden built by Zanobi del Rosso. From the so-called “Garden of
the Knight” one can access the fascinating Porcelain Museum.

Visiting Boboli completes the tour of Palazzo Pitti, and allows one to fully grasp
the spirit of the life at court and admire one of the most unique gardens in the
world.

Forte Belvedere is the common name of the fortress dominating Florence and
named after “Santa Maria in San Giorgio del Belvedere” and it is one of the two
v. S. Le

fortresses present within the City.

a Pace
dell
donna
onardo

The construction of the Fortress was commissioned by Grand Duke Ferdinando

1st and carried out between 1590 and 1595 by the trusted court architect Ber-
nardo Buontalenti. The new construction was meant to serve multiple purposes:
protect Palazzo Pitti and the Oltrarno area, be a symbol of the strength and power
of the Medici, as well as guaranteeing a safe haven for the Grand Duke in case of
peril.

This defensive system, in fact, allowed for a complete protection of the area up to
Palazzo Vecchio, thanks also to the Vasari Corridor, a hidden path connecting the
Uffizi and the complex of Palazzo Pitti.

The fortress was reopened to the public in 2013 but it can only be visited during
summer, in the occasion of special events (mostly contemporary art exhibitions)
set up inside the central building and in the surrounding gardens. From this point,
one can enjoy an extraordinary panorama of the city and its surrounding country-
side.

Among the pieces most worthy to mention: the original statue of the “Por-

cellino” (little pig/boar) by Pietro Tacca (originally placed in the city market
and now replaced by a copy), “the Charity” by Tino di Camaino, “the Ma-
donna of the Cordai” by Donatello, “the San Michele Arcangelo” by Anto-
nio del Pollaiolo, “the Martyrdom of a Saint” by Tintoretto and numerous
drawings by Tiepolo. According to Bardini’s will, after his death (1922) the
prestigious collection was to be donated to the Municipality of Florence,
and so it was.

Recently the Museum has been restored, especially in the original exhibition
spaces of the 1920s, including the characteristic blue painting of most of
the rooms.

Designed and built when Florence was the Capital of the Kingdom of Italy (1865-
CIMITERO MONUMENTALE
DELLE PORTE SANTE
1870), as part of the major modernization plan of the city carried on by Giuseppe
Poggi, this splendid terrace is built according to the typical 19th century style.

Poggi’s intention was to create a monumental square celebrating Michelangelo, as

testified by the presence of replicas of some of the his masterpieces, such as the
David (original in the Galleria dell’Accademia), the sculptures of the Day and the
Night, the Twilight and the Aurora (originals are in the New Sacristy, Medici Chap-
els of San Lorenzo).

At the margins of the square one can find the splendid loggia in neoclassical style
that, according to the original project never realized, was supposed to host a muse-
um dedicated to Michelangelo and his art.

Standing at the top of a hill overlooking the entire city, just behind Piazzale Mi-
chelangelo, the Church is one of the most extraordinary examples of romanesque
architecture in Italy. The construction of the church started in the 11th century, on
the remains of an ancient of worshipping place dedicated to Miniato, a Christian
martyr who lived in the 3rd century in the Roman Florentia. According to the tra-
dition Miniato was buried in this place, exactly where the church stands now. Orig-
inally founded by Benedictine order, the Basilica is still managed by the chapter of
Olivetan monks. Beyond the splendid façade, decorated with geometric marble in-
lays (“Carrara” white and “Prato” green), one can admire the interiors of the church
which reflect the classic structure of romanesque constructions.

Along the central nave one can admire the remains of the medieval floor, showing
zodiac symbols; next there is the marble decorations of the choir embellished by a
magnificent pulpit, which is just a prelude to the great mosaic covering the ceiling
of the apse, dominated by the “Blessing Christ”. Descending the stairs you can en-
ter the suggestive crypt, where the remains of San Miniato are preserved and the
monks still sing Gregorian chants during Vespers. Another noteworthy masterpiec-
es are the 14th century paintings located in the Sacristy, depicting episodes from
the life of Saint Benedict. Both the Chapel of the Cardinal of Portugal (authentic
masterpiece, with works by Luca della Robbia, Rossellino,Pollaiolo) and Micheloz-
zo’s Chapel of the Crucifix date back to the Renaissance period.
