Some important defini ons:

Janka Hardness Test:

The Janka hardness test measures the resistance of a sample of wood to den ng and wear. It measures the
force required to embed an 11.28 millimetres (0.444 in) diameter steel ball halfway into a sample of wood.
2
This method leaves a hemispherical indenta on with an area of 200 mm . A common use of Janka hardness
ra ngs is to determine whether a species is suitable for use as flooring.

Elas c Modulus:
The Elas c Modulus is a measure of board bending strength. It is a func on of stress over strain, in that,
the amount of strain a board can handle from an applied stress and s ll bounce back to its original shape,
thus be considered elas c. Roughly, how many pounds of force can you put on a board before it breaks or
cracks.

Density:
Density is a measure of how ghtly packed together the molecules are in a par cular substance. It is
basically how much ma er is packed into a certain volume. For example if you have a sample of gold,
and a sample of water, and they are the exact same size, the gold weighs over 19 mes as much.
Density is stated as mass per unit volume.

Specific gravity:
Specific gravity is the ra o of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance. In this
case (as in most) the reference substance is water, which has a density of 1 gram/cm^3. Kind of redundant
to us. Since the density will be numerically the same as the specific gravity.

Sensi zer:
A substance that, when you are exposed to it over mul ple occasions, you develop a sensi vity to it such
that you can no longer be exposed to it without exhibi ng an allergic reac on.

CITES:
The Conven on on the Interna onal Trade in Endangered Species is a is a mul lateral treaty to protect
endangered plants and animals. Organisms are listed in one of 3 appendices (I, II, III) if they are in danger,
and the appendix number is dependent on the threat level. The lower the appendix number, the greater
the danger the plant or animal is facing. h ps://www.cites.org/

IUCN:
The Interna onal Union for Conserva on of Nature is an interna onal organiza on working in the field of
nature conserva on and sustainable use of natural resources. It is involved in data gathering and analysis,
research, field projects, advocacy, and educa on. h ps://www.iucn.org/
