Case Study for Conman Systems Pvt.Ltd.

- By Group 2 (OB) PGDRMX-03

Problem Statement: Alice George is feel deprived of what she deserve and faced with the
decision problem of either quitting her job versus compromising with her values of hard work
and independence which has led her towards success in her professional career. The magnitude
of the problem gets intensified by the fact that gender discrimination is prevalent in the
organization and also people in the system have weakened value system which predisposes them
towards resorting to unethical shortcuts.

Detailed Analysis: Throughout her professional career Alice George has always been an
independent woman who believes in hard work. By employing these values she was able to
achieve greater heights in both her previous company (Orion Electronics) and Conman Systems.
When there was a conflict with her value of independence in Orion Electronics she preferred to
quit it and join Conman Systems although it entailed traversing a hard path.

Now in Conman Systems she is again faced with a compromise with her values of hard work and
equality (compromised by gender bias). The MD of the company Amitabh Sen wanted to venture
in business segment to increase profits and be a market leader. In an executive meeting it was
purported by VP, Finance that getting into business segment will require different methods than
being employed by Alice George which hints at gender discrimination and unethical shortcuts in
the organization. After this Mr. Naik was inducted for business segment expansion who also
proposed to resort to unethical shortcuts like bribery. When Alice George complains to Mr. Sen
she was faced with the consequence of losing his preferred post and transferred to an unknown
domain. This further exemplifies the gender bias and weak value system of the C suite. As a
result Alice feel dejected and feel deprived of the post she really deserved in the company. Alice
George can resort to the following options to get out of the situation:

1. She can try to convince Mr. Amit Sen showing her competency and how adhering to the
value of hard work (and not resorting to shortcuts) she was able to more than double the
profit in the last four years. If the shortcuts have worked earlier then the company would
had already been a market player before she joined. Also she can get her subordinates to
vouch for her hard work and ethical ways to change the belief system of MD.
Considering that the increase in laptop market share was from 1% to 5% and the profits
have doubled during the period it is very much evident that her ways are affecting the
business segment favorably also.
2. If method work does not work she can also take the position of VP PR and can have a
better control on the practices of company and keep the values system intact.
3. If nothing works she should look for a new job and accept the VP PR position for time
being.
