INTRODUCTION

The advancements in technology has opened a whole new world for humans to work with ease

and have technological implication in every aspect of life. The invention of telephone has

removed the communication barriers. It has made very convenient for us to communicate

wherever we are thus removing the communications barriers.

The invention of cellular phones has put the whole world in the palm of humans. Nowadays the

cellular phones are not only the way for communication but more than that. The cellular

phones are used for social networking, surfing internet, entertainment, music, videos filming

and much much more.Infact the use of cellular phones has taken preference over television.

The benefits of cellular phones are countless and the concept of globalization fits in its true

sense for the cellular phones. In this article we are going to present the impact of cellular

phones usage on university students in Pakistan.

During the last decade the use of cellular phones in Pakistan has been increased remarkably.

The usage of cellular phones is not only limited to offices or professionals but also to the

youngers and students and especially university students.

In this article we will present the impact of cellular phones on university students in Pakistan.

Its impact on their education, academic performance, social life,health,career.The pros and

cons of mobile phones will be highlighted based on our research covering different dimensions

discussed above for students.

We will try to portray that cellular phones are actually helping students or they just distracting

them from their main purpose of education. Does the usage has any positive impact on

education and academic performance of students? Or it is only a source of entertainment for

students.

The purpose of the research also highlights whether the students are interactive socially or they

are just considering the cellular phones their social mate. The academic performance is affected

or not and on what grounds we reach a conclusion that cellular phones has any positive and

negative impact on student.

LITERATURE REVIEW

In this literature review we will first review the impact of cellular phone usage on academic

performance of students in universities. Firstly the impact on academic performance is

reviewed and it resulted positively as many students use mobile for social contacts. The usage is

limited to sending or receiving text or calls during university sessions.

The students try to use their cellphones only for educational purposes during university

sessions. The students surf internet or use dictionary or calculator during classroom session

which is helpful for their educational purposes. The majority of students put their cellphones on

silent or vibrating mode so that the class room not get disturbed during the classroom session.

The majority students try to avoid attending calls unless very important. The cellular phones

not only helped in improvement of academic performance of the students but also improved

the quality of education.so overall the academic performance of university student is not
effected with cellular phone usage.Infact it is playing a positive role for students for their

research work and getting in touch with their supervisor.

The second dimension of literature review relates to impact of cellular phone usage on social

life of students. The cellular phones do effect the social life of students. The students tend to

use only cell phone instead of engaging in physical social activity. They think that a mere call

will fulfill the formality to fulfill social obligation.

The social life impact indicates positive attitude towards family interaction. The cellular phone

usage is mostly observed with family by the students. Mobile technology is the common ground

many students use as a platform for discussion with family when out of native city.

The students are more driven to cellular based technology for social causes for example

forwarding messages for social causes though admirable to spread awareness but the main

thing is to contribute in it with your presence which is lacking due to cellular phones.
