Benchmarking involves comparing performance with the performance of another, similar
organisation or operation. Types of Benchmarking: o Internal: An entity may have two similar operations, such as regional or area branches. The best-performing branch can be used as a benchmark. o Competitive: Comparing an entity against the most successful competitor in the industry. There are practical difficulties here since the competitor will not provide information about it’s operations. o Operational: Comparing performance of a specific function, such as customer order handling or warehousing. A company might be able to find a company in a completely different industry that carries out similar function and the other company might allow its operations to be studied.
