of their spiritual blessings. Aameen
Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ was born on a Monday, the 7th of
Rabi ul Awwal Shareef in either 80 or 83 Hijri in Madinah Munaw’wara,
the blessed and radiant city of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah . His blessed
name was Ja’far bin Muhammad, and he was also known as Abu Abdullah
and Abu Isma’eel. He was blessed with many titles, amongst which were
Saadiq, Faadil and Taahir. Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ is the
son of Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Baaqir ؓ◌ who is the son of Hazrat
Sayyiduna Imam Zainul Abideen ؓ◌, who is the son of Hazrat Sayyiduna
Imam Husain Shaheed e Karbala ؓ◌, who is the son of the beloved
daughter of Sayyiduna Rasoolullah , Sayyidatuna Faatima Zahra اﷲ ﻋﻨﻬﺎ ر
Hazrat Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ would say, “From amongst all my children, the
most exalted is Moosa Kaazim. He is a pearl from amongst the pearls
(treasures) of Allah.”
Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ is the sixth Imam and Shaykh of
the Silsila Aaliyah Qaadiriyah Barakatiyah Razviyah Nooriyah. He was the
6
mureed and Khalifa of his noble father Sayyiduna Imam Baaqir ؓ◌.
His noble father is Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Baaqir ؓ◌, who was born in
Madinah Shareef 3 years before the Battle of Karbala, on the 3rd of Safar 57
Hijri.
Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Baaqir ؓ◌, the noble father of Sayyiduna Imam
Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ as we just mentioned is the beloved son of Imam Zainul
Abideen ؓ◌. In other words, he is the grandson of Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam
Husain ؓ◌ and the great grandson of Sayyidatuna Faatima Zahra ر اﷲ ﻋﻨﻬﺎ
and Sayyiduna Maula Ali ؓ◌.
7
The distinguished student of Sayyiduna Imam Azam Abu Hanifa ؓ◌,
“I asked Imam Abu Hanifa ؓ◌ if he had met Imam Baaqir ؓ◌ and he said,
‘Yes, I have met him, and I asked a Mas’ala (Islamic ruling) from him. He
explained it so beautifully, that never before have I heard anyone explain
it in this manner’.”
“My father would often rise in the middle of the night and weep in the
Court of Allah. Then, with complete humility he would say the following,
‘O Allah, You commanded me to do all good things, but I did not fulfil this,
and You commanded me to abstain from all wrongs, and I could not keep
myself away from wrongs. I am Your humble servant standing in Your
exalted Court as Your criminal, and I have no excuse’.”
“O, my beloved son! Almighty Allah has hidden three things in three
things. He has hidden His pleasure in His obedience, so do not disobey
any command (of Allah) for you do not know in which one is His pleasure.
He has hidden His wrath in His disobedience, thus do not think of any sin
as minor, for you do not know in which one is His wrath. He has hidden
the Awliyah Allah amongst the people, so do not look down on any
sincere servant of Allah, for you do not know if he is a Wali.”
8
His beloved mother was also a very blessed and pious woman. Her name
was Sayyidatuna Umme Fardah ر اﷲ ﻋﻨﻬﺎ.
Sayyidatuna Umme Fardah اﷲ ﻋﻨﻬﺎ ر was the daughter of Hazrat Qaasim ؓ◌,
who was the great-grandson of the first Khalifa of Islam Hazrat Sayyiduna
Abu Bakr Siddique ؓ◌.
Haafiz Abu Nu’aim ؓ◌ reports on the authority of Amr bin Miqdaam ؓ◌,
“When I would look at Hazrat Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌, I would immediately
feel (sense) that he was from amongst the descendants of the Prophets.”
9
He was, without a doubt, the true successor to the Muslim empire and one
of the greatest Imams of his era. Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ was a great
worshipper (‘Aabid) and one of the greatest Sufis. Many secrets of
Tasawwuf were explained by him. It is in Tabaqaat ul Abraar that he
received the authority of Hadith from his blessed father, from Imam
Zuhri, Imam Naaf’i and Ibn Munkadir, etc.
“The noble Imams such as Yahya bin Sa’eed, Ibn Jareeh, Imam Maalik bin
Anas, Imam Sufyan Thawri, Sufyan bin Uyainah, Imam Abu Hanifa and
Abu Ayub Sijistani (Allah is pleased with them) narrated Hadith from
him.”
He was a very noble and virtuous personality. His inner and outer
appearance exuded brightness and radiance. He addressed the poor and
the downtrodden with great love. Once he summoned all his servants and
said to them,
“Let us all give our hands in the hands of one another and promise that
whichever one of us first receives salvation on the day of Qiyaamah, he
will intercede for the rest of us.”
10
On hearing this, they said,
Allahu Akbar! Look at the humility and the modesty that Sayyiduna Imam
Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ possessed. He was one of the greatest personalities of his
time, who spent his entire life seeking the pleasure of Allah and His
Beloved Rasool , yet he says that he is ashamed to stand with his deeds
before the beloved Rasool .
We should learn Fear for Allah, Modesty for in the presence of Sayyiduna
Rasoolullah and humility from Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far ؓ◌. This
should be a lesson to those of us who have pride over our deeds and feel
that we have no need to strive further to attain the pleasure of Allah and
His Rasool .
This should further serve as a caution to those who live heedlessly and do
not even fulfil their Faraa’id and Wajibaat in the Court of Allah. We should
read these words of Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far over and over again, and think
about what our condition will be when we stand before Sayyiduna
Rasoolullah on the day of Reckoning!
11
Once, Hazrat Dawood Ta’ee ؓ◌ visited Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌
and requested,
“O, Abu Sulaiman! You are a great Zaahid (Devotee) of your era. What
need do you have for my advice?”
12
On hearing this response from Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌, Hazrat
Dawood Ta’ee ؓ◌ began to weep by saying,
“O, Allah! When such a great personality, who is the descendant of the
Beloved Rasool , and whose reality is filled with light and wisdom, and
whose great-grandmother is Sayyidatuna Faatima ر اﷲ ﻋﻨﻬﺎ, is so afraid of his
future (hereafter) and about his condition, then what right does Dawood
Ta’ee have to be proud of his deeds?” [Masaalik-us-Saalikeen]
He was well known for his Ibaadat (sincere worship), and his striving in
the Court of Allah. Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Malik ؓ◌ says,
“I spent a very long time serving him (Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌),
and I always found him in one of three forms of Ibaadat. He would either
be engrossed in Namaaz (Salaah), or in the recitation of the Holy Qur’an,
or he would be fasting. He never narrated any Hadith Shareef without
Wudu.” [Tazkirat-ul-Awliyah]
When reading books on the lives of the faithful and devout servants of
Allah, like Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ we should make a
point of reflecting upon our lives. We should observe their sincerity and
devotion in Ibaadat, and we should then look at our lives. We may never
come even close to the level of Ibaadat performed by them, but after
looking at their way of life and their Ibaadat and devotion, we should
think about our hereafter and reflect on how much of our lives we have
wasted in the worthless love of this mundane world.
13
Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ was indeed a faithful servant of Allah. He
always attained whatever he would ask for from the Court of Almighty
Allah.
Abul Qaasim Tabri reports from Wahb that he heard Layth bin Sa’ad
saying ؓ◌,
“O Allah I desire to eat grapes. Please bless me with some, and my clothes
have become old and tattered, so please give me new ones.”
14
Hazrat Layth bin Sa’ad ؓ◌ says,
“By Allah, he had not as yet completed his Dua, when I saw a basket of
grapes kept before him, whereas it was not even the season for grapes,
and I did not see any grapes near him before his Dua. I also saw that there
were two pieces of clothing kept near the grapes. I have never seen such
beautiful fabric before. He then sat down to eat the grapes. I went up to
him and said, Sir! May I also have a share in this? So he asked how this
was possible, and I said, I was saying Aameen as you made the Dua. He
said, ‘Well then, step forward and join me.’ Hence, I also partook in the
grapes. They were so delicious, that never before have I eaten such
delicious grapes. I ate until I was satisfied, but the basket remained as it
was before, full of grapes. He then offered one piece of cloth to me, and I
said that I had no need for it, so he tied one around his waist, and he
draped the other over his shoulder. He then descended from the
mountain, and I followed him. As he drew close to Safa-Marwah, a beggar
called out to him by saying, ‘O Descendant of the Beloved Rasool ! Give
these clothes to me, and Allah will dress you in the clothes of Jannat.’ He
immediately gave the two sheets to the beggar. (On seeing this), I
enquired about the identity of this pious man from the beggar, who
informed me that he was Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌. I then looked
for him so that I may listen to some words of wisdom from him and attain
his blessings, but he had vanished from my sight.” [Tazkirat-ul-Awliyah]
15
Once, some people noticed that Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ was
dressed in a very expensive robe. One of them walked up to him and said,
“Huzoor! It is not good for the Ahle Bayt to wear such expensive
clothing.”
He caught hold of the man’s hand and thrust it into his sleeves. The man
was amazed when he found that he was wearing clothes made from sacks
under his robe. Hazrat Ja’far ؓ◌ then said,
“The inner garb is for my Creator, and the outer garb is for the creation.”
A man once lost his purse with one thousand Dinars. Since Imam Ja’far ؓ◌
was walking next to him, he grabbed hold of the Imams hand and accused
him of stealing his money. Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ asked how much was in his
purse, and he said one thousand Dinars. The Imam took him home and
gave him one thousand Dinars. The next day, the man found his purse, so
he rushed over to return the money to the Imam. Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ said,
He later inquired about whom the Imam was, and was informed it was
Imam Ja’far ؓ◌. On hearing this, he was saddened and regretted his
behaviour.
16
Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ spent a great deal of his time
propagating the word of Allah and His Rasool . He always refuted those
who did not believe in Allah.
“Malik, whose servant you are; is He from the Kingdom of the skies or the
Kingdom of the earth, the Creator who is the Creator of your son, is he the
Creator of the skies or the Creator of the Earths?”
The atheist could not answer this question. Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq
ؓ◌ then said,
“Did you ever journey beneath the earth? Do you know what is beyond
it?”
He replied in the negative and said, “I think there is nothing beyond it.”
17
Again he replied in the negative, so Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ said,
“Did you ever travel the entire East and the West, and did you understand
anything about the future from this?”
said,
“I am amazed, that you are not aware of the earth and what is beneath it,
and you are not aware of the sky and what is beyond it, yet in this state of
ignorance, you still have the arrogance to reject the existence of Allah. O,
Ignorant man! There is no argument for one who is naive about that
which is a reality. The sun, the moon, the night and day, are all in a
particular pattern. Verily they are within some Divine Control. If they
were free, then they would move as they willed and would sometimes go
to an appointed spot and not return. Why is it that the night does not take
the place of the day and the day does not take the place of night? Do you
not ponder upon the reality of the skies and the earth? Why does the sky
not come to the earth and why is it that the earth is not crushed by the
sky? There is indeed ‘One’ (Allah), who has all this in His Divine Control.
It is He (Allah) who is All Powerful. It is He, who is our and their Rabb.”
18
It is mentioned that the great Sufi Hazrat Bayazid Bustami ؓ◌ used to
distribute water in the Court of Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌.
It is mentioned that Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ placed his saintly
sight upon Hazrat Bayazid Bustami ؓ◌ once, and he thus became one of
the greatest mystics of his time. He then served in the Court of Hazrat
Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ and became one of the greatest Awliyah
of his time.
Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ said, “An intelligent person is one who can differentiate
between two good things and two evils, so that he may choose the better
of two good things, and he may be able to repel the worse of two evils.”
19
• Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ would often make the following
Dua;
• One who walks on the wrong path will always arouse suspicion.
A miser, for he will cause you severe loss, so he can gain even the
slightest benefit
A man who is involved in illicit dealings, for he will sell you for
one morsel, and will still be hopeful of getting even less than that.
[Masaalik-us-Saalikeen]
21
Like all the Awliyah Allah, his greatest Karaamat was his steadfastness on
the Shariat. His every step was in accordance with the Sunnat of the
Beloved Rasool . Some of his karaamats are being quoted below:
“One wall of the house is attached to the house of the Beloved Rasool ;
the other wall is attached to the house of Hazrat Ali ؓ◌. The third wall is
attached to the house of Imam Hasan ,ؓ◌ and the fourth wall is attached
to the house of Imam Husain ؓ◌ .”
The man took this title deed and asked his family members to place it in
his grave when he passed away. After his passing, his family members
found the title deed on the top of his grave and on the rear of the title
deed the following words were written, “Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ was
truthful and loyal in what he said.” [Masaalik-us-Saalikeen]
22
Once, while Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ was on his way to Hajj, he
stopped to rest under a date tree which was completely dead.
At the time of the Chasht Salaah, he commanded the tree to present him
with some dates. Immediately, the tree became green, lush and full of
dates. Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ then ate from it.
A villager was passing by and saw this. He saw this great karaamat and
claimed that it was magic. Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ said,
“This is not magic. Almighty Allah has blessed me with such excellence,
that he accepts all my Duas. If I make Dua, even you can be transformed
into a dog.”
Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ had not yet completed what he was
saying when the villager began to resemble a dog.
23
Khalifa Mansur once asked one of his ministers to summon Sayyiduna
Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ to his Court. He informed his servants that when Imam
Ja’far arrived, they should wait for him to remove his crown. The moment
he did this, they should martyr Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ . The minister was
displeased with this and thus tried to explain to Mansur how sinful it was
to kill a pious person, who was also a Sayyid. The khalifa did not take heed
and summoned Imam Ja’far ؓ◌. When Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ arrived, the
servants waited for their cue, so that they may martyr him.
Instead, Mansur stood up from his throne and rushed towards the Imam.
He brought him towards his throne and allowed him to sit on it with great
respect, while he sat on the ground in front of the great Imam. The
servants and ministers were startled to see this sudden change in plan.
Mansur then asked the Imam if he had any requests. Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ said,
“In future do not summon me to your court, as I wish to remain
engrossed in Ibaadat.”
When he heard these words, his body began to tremble, and he allowed
the Imam to leave with respect. After the Imam left, the minister asked
about the sudden change in plan, and Mansur said, “When Imam Ja’far ؓ◌
entered my court, I saw a huge python with him. The Python had its one
lip over my throne and the other lip under my throne, and it spoke to me
and said that if I tried ever to harm the Imam, it would consume me with
my throne, and that is why I behaved in the manner which I did.”
[Tazkirat-ul-Awliyah]
24
While discussing the life of Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ Allama Jaami
ؓ◌ says,
Abu Busayr mentions that I had gone to Madina Munawwarah and I was
accompanied by my bondswoman, with whom I was intimate. Afterwards,
I emerged to go to the public bath, and I saw crowds of people going into
the house of Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ so that they may make his Ziyaarah. I too
joined them. When we entered the home of Imam Ja’far ؓ◌, his sight fell
upon me, and he said,
“On Abu Busayr! You are probably unaware that you should not go to the
homes of the Prophet and the homes of the Children of the Prophet, while
you are still in an impure state.”
The person says, I immediately went to Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far ؓ◌, and
after conveying Salaam, I sat before him. He then directed his blessed
attention towards me and said, do you wish to get back your sheet? I said
yes. He summoned his servant who came carrying a sheet. I immediately
recognised it as my sheet. Hazrat Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ said, take this and be
grateful to Allah.
Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ asked me about the same friend of mine
when we met. I said, Sayyidi he is still in prison like before. Hazrat
Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far ؓ◌ made Dua, and then after about an hour passed
the beloved Imam said, By Allah! Your friend has been released.
The narrator mentions that when he returned home after Hajj, he met his
friend and asked him about the time of his release from prison. He said
that he was released on the day of Arafat after Asr Namaaz.
26
Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ was blessed with six sons and one
daughter. Their names are;
Hazrat Isma’eel ؓ◌
Hazrat Muhammad ؓ◌
Hazrat Ali ؓ◌
Hazrat Abdullah ؓ◌
Hazrat Ishaaq ؓ◌
Hazrat Imam Moosa Kaazim ؓ◌
Bibi Umme Fardah اﷲ ﻋﻨﻬﺎ ( رwhom he named after his mother)
Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ passed away during the rule of the
second Abbasi Khalifa Abu Ja’far Mansur bin Abul Abbas As Safah on a
Friday, the 15th of Rajab 148 Hijri at the age of 68 in Madina Munawwarah.
Some narrations mentioned the 24th of Shawwal 148 Hijri. [Masaalik-us-
Saalikeen]
27
Even though the Wisaal of Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ is on the 15th
of Rajab, on the 22nd of Rajab Sunnis do a Niyaz (Faateha) attributed to
Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌. It must be noted that there is no objection to
making this Niyaz or any other Niyaz of the Beloveds.
However, our Masha’ikh have mentioned that 22nd of Rajab also marks the
Wisaal of Sahabi e Rasool Hazrat Sayyiduna Amir Mu’awiyah ؓ◌ and some
have said that shias show happiness on this day, at his Wisaal.
Our Masters have mentioned that when doing the Niyaz of Sayyiduna
Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ on this day, we should also include with it the
Faateha of Hazrat Sayyiduna Amir Mu’awiyah ؓ◌, as some have mentioned
that Sayyiduna Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ initially recommended this Faateha
to honour Hazrat Amir Mu’awiyah ؓ◌.
In the month of Rajab, the Koonde of Hazrat Jalaal Bukhari ﻋﻠﻴ ﺍﻟﺮﺣﻤis done
by some people. This is done by cooking rice or Kheer which is filled into
earthen troughs (i.e. clay bowls). After that, Faateha is made (over it), and
it is fed to the people. This too is permissible. However, there is one thing
that is undesirable, and that is the fact that they only feed it to people at
the place where the bowls have been filled. They do not allow one to
move away from there.
28
This is an absurd practice (i.e. the practice of saying it can only be eaten
there) and is the manner of ignorant people. This does not prevail
amongst those who are educated.
Similarly, during the month of Rajab, earthen troughs are filled with
Purees for the Esaal-e-Thawaab of Imam Ja’far Saadiq ؓ◌ (i.e. famously
known as Kheer Puri). This too is permissible. However, even in this, some
people have brought in the same restriction. This is an unfounded
restriction. With regards to this ‘Koonde’ (i.e. Niyaz of Imam Ja’far), there
is also a book which is known as ‘Dastaan-e-Ajeeb. Some people read this
during this time. There is no source of that which has been written in this
book. It is advisable to refrain from reading it. One should simply read the
Faateha and perform the Esaal-e-Thawaab. [Bahaar e Shariat Volume 16]
Hence, to do this Niyaz on the 22nd of Rajab or any other day is entirely
permissible. The same applies to any other Niyaz. It may be done on any
day, as long as the intention is pure and it is done within the confines of
the pristine Shariah.
It must further be noted that anyone who slanders any Sahabi of Nabi
is destined for hell. Aala Hazrat Imam Ahle Sunnat ؓ◌ says that the one
who slanders Hazrat Amir Mu’awiyah ؓ◌ is a dog from among the dogs of
Hell.
“The dust which entered the nostrils of the horse of Hazrat Amir
Mu’awiyah ؓ◌ while he rode in battle beside Nabi is more virtuous
than Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz ؓ◌.”
