The Commonwealth’s roots go back to the British Empire, when countries around the world were ruled by Britain. 5. The commonwealth was created in 1884 and consisted of former colonies of the British Empire. It was founded in the context of Decolonization. The term “CW of Nations” was first used in 1884 by Lord Rosebury who was an English politician. 6. Originally, there were 5 members: the United Kingdom, Canada, the Irish Free State, Newfoundland and the Union of South Africa. 7. At the 1926 conference, Britain and the Dominions agreed that they were all equal members of a community within the British Empire. They all owed allegiance to the British king or queen, but the United Kingdom did not rule over them. 8. These aspects to the relationship were formalised by the Statute of Westminster in 1931. The 1949 London Declaration ended this, allowing republican and indigenous monarchic members on the condition that they recognised the British monarch as the "Head of the Commonwealth". 9. King George VI was the first Head of the Commonwealth, and Queen Elizabeth II became Head when he died. The Queen holds discussions with Commonwealth leaders. She visits the host country during each summit, meeting the leaders in individual audience and at larger formal functions. The Queen has ruled for longer than any other Monarch in British history, becoming
a much loved and respected figure across the globe .
10. The Commonwealth provides common values to member countries such as equality, democracy, good governance, individual liberty, non-discrimination, rule of law and world peace. Commonwealth countries are united by their common interests but remain autonomous. They are not bound by any treaty, they may be neutral when conflict involves one or more countries of the organization. ■ 11.
