Remember: Mullá Husayn Carries Out His Mission

The Báb had sent Mullá Husayn to go north from Shiraz
on a teaching mission to visit Isfahan, Kashan, Qum, and
Tíhran, and then to the northernmost province of Iran
(Khurasan), after which he was to return to Karbala in Iraq.
Like the other Letters of the Living, he was also to go to his
hometown (Mashhad) to spread the Teachings. Of the city of
Tíhran, He told Mullá Husayn: “A secret lies hidden in that
city. When made manifest, it shall turn the earth into
paradise. My hope is that you may partake of its grace and
recognize its splendor.” He gave him several Tablets to
share, including one special one, wrapped in cloth.
In Isfahan, the majority of the mullás not only refused to
accept the new Message from the Báb proclaimed by Mullá
Husayn, they complained to the highest religious leaders
about him, claiming that the new teachings were dangerous.
Only a few people in Isfahan accepted the new teachings. He
found similar lack of receptivity in Kashan and in Qum. In
both cities, all but a very few hearts were very hostile to
Mullá Husayn’s announcement of the Message of the Báb.
However, in all three cities, those few believers continued to
teach and raised up many more followers who would
heroically defend the Faith of the Báb in the future.
In Tíhrán, Mullá Husayn took a room at a religious
school, called a madrisih. He then began asking questions
around the city to try to locate the One to whom he had been
instructed to give a message from the Báb. A student, named
Mu’allim, at the school where he was staying, overheard
Mullá Husayn talking to one of the most hostile religious
leaders, and was attracted by his words. Mu’allim visited
Mullá Husayn’s room and declared his acceptance of the
new teachings. Mullá Husayn asked Mu’allim where he was
from. He answered that he was from Núr, in the province of
Mázandarán. Mullá Husayn then asked if there was anyone
among the family of the late Mírzá Buzurg-i-Núrí who had
proved to be as noble of character, charm, artistic ability,
and intellectual attainments as Mírzá Buzurg. Mu’allim said
there was one son whose virtuous life, high attainments, and
loving-kindness were well known. After more questions,
Mullá Husayn learned that this son’s name was Husayn-‘Alí
and He was 28 years old. Mullá Husayn became very
excited! He asked Mu’allim to carry a scroll wrapped in
cloth to Husayn-‘Alí and to bring back His reply. When
Mu’allim returned, he told Mullá Husayn that he had been
given a gift of Russian sugar and a package of tea to bring
back to him, as well as Husayn-‘Alí’s acceptance that the
Báb’s Message was, indeed, from God. Mullá Husayn did
not visit Bahá’u’lláh during his stay in Tíhrán, maybe to
protect Him and His family from becoming known as Bábís.
He tried many times, but did not succeed in delivering the
writings of the Báb to the shah (king) of Persia.
Finally, Mullá Husayn went to his hometown of
Mashhad to teach the Faith of the Báb there, and he sent a
report of all his activities on his journey, including the
names of all the new believers and those who had openly
rejected the Faith, to the Báb. The news that gave the Báb
the greatest joy on receiving Mullá Husayn’s report, was the
enrollment of Husayn-‘Alí, to Whom He would give the title
“Bahá” (Glory).

Memory Verse: Practice many, MANY times every day. Say it in class next time.

“O My beloved friends! You are the bearers of the name of God in this Day. You have been chosen as the repositories of His mystery. It
behoves each one of you to manifest the attributes of God, and to exemplify by your deeds and words the signs of His righteousness, His
power and glory. The very members of your body must bear witness to the loftiness of your purpose, the integrity of your life, the reality of
your faith, and the exalted character of your devotion. For verily I say, this is the Day spoken of by God in His Book: ‘On that day will We set
a seal upon their mouths yet shall their hands speak unto Us, and their feet shall bear witness to that which they shall have done.’ Ponder the
words of Jesus addressed to His disciples, as He sent them forth to propagate the Cause of God. In words such as these, He bade them arise and
fulfil their mission: ‘Ye are even as the fire which in the darkness of the night has been kindled upon the mountain-top. Let your light shine
before the eyes of men. Such must be the purity of your character and the degree of your renunciation, that the people of the earth may
through you recognize and be drawn closer to the heavenly Father who is the Source of purity and grace .
For none has seen the Father who is in heaven. You who are His spiritual children must
by your deeds exemplify His virtues, and witness to His glory. You are the salt of the
earth, but if the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? Such must be the
degree of your detachment, that into whatever city you enter to proclaim and teach the
Cause of God, you should in no wise expect either meat or reward from its people.’ ”
