QUESTION 1
a) A laboratory is a place or part of a facility that could possess hazardous if not properly
manage. It is a place mainly for conducting research or experimental analysis. Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE) refers to protective garment designed to protect the body
of the wearer from injury that should be placed in laboratory. Briefly discuss FIVE (5)
types of PPE and its function. (CO2-PO1)
(10 marks)
b) Haze has become a common and usual phenomenon in Malaysia. Due to the adverse
effects of this hazy condition, it is important to regularly assess the air quality of our
surrounding environment. Based on your laboratory experience, describe the procedure
for monitoring the quality of air at the surrounding area of Civil Engineering
Faculty using the air quality monitoring equipment. (CO2-PO1)

QUESTION 2
Data of noise level measurements were collected from two different locations namely
construction site and rail road station are shown in Table 1.0. Analyze the data and
discuss on the sources of noise pollution from both case studies. As an engineer,
suggest appropriate solutions to reduce the noise level from both areas. (CO2-PO1)

QUESTION 3
a) What are the differences between total suspended solid (TSS) and volatile suspended
solid (VSS). Discuss the main purpose in conducting the volatile suspended solid
experiment? (CO2-PO1)
(4 marks)
b) Volatile Suspended Solid (VSS) measurement analysis were conducted for 100mL
sample of water which taken from a river. The amount of volatile suspended solid was
recorded as 200 mg/L. The weight of solids and dish before ignition was 1.861g. What
is the amount of fixed suspended solid for the same sample? Note that the weight of
the dish = 1.813g . (CO2-PO1)
Hint: Volatile Suspended Solid (mg/L) = ((A-B) x 1000)/ sample volume in mL Fixed
Suspended Solid (mg/L) = ((B-C) x 1000)/ sample volume in mL

QUESTION 4
A Jar Test was performed to determine the optimum dosage of coagulant A and
coagulant B to treat water sample of Tasik Chini and the graphs were shown in Figure
Q4(a) and Figure Q4(b). (Assume the volume of each jar is 600 ml). (CO2-PO1)
(5 marks)
b) Determine the optimum dosage of each coagulant (in mg/L) if the initial concentration
of both coagulant is 500 mg/L.
(5 marks)
c) Briefly explain which coagulant is suitable to treat the water sample for potable use.
(5 marks)
QUESTION 5
An investigation to determine the effectiveness of treatment processes in Sewage
Treatment Plant ( STP) was conducted. One of the parameters being measured is
dissolved oxygen (DO). Three samples were taken from each location in the STP such
as inlet point (Sample A-raw), after aeration process (Sample B) and at the outlet
(Sample C). The results are presented as illustrated in Figure Q5.

i) Determine the BOD5 for each sample if volume of sample used in the experiment is 20mL
(5 marks) ii) Determine the percentage of BOD removal for each process. (5 marks) iii)
Briefly explain on the effluent compliance and discuss TWO (2) consequences if the
concentration of BOD5 is high in water bodies. (5 marks)
QUESTION 6
An industrial plant is reported to have discharged effluents containing inorganic matter and
heavy metal elements. The management have decided to conduct a water quality test which
is more quicker and the results are reproducible within short period of time. Identify that the
most suitable test to be conducted and elaborate its laboratory procedure. (CO2-PO1)
(10 marks)
QUESTION 7
a) Explain the visual observation that indicates the present of nitrite in the water sample. Then,
discuss steps need to be taken if the spectrophotometer reading shows “over range”. (CO2-
PO1)
(5 marks)
b) Explain the additional steps for nitrate as compared to nitrite experiment using LR
Cadmium Reduction Method. What is the importance of these steps? (CO2-PO1)
