The individual’s cognitive
representation of the self which
consists of the substance and the
content of self-conceptions.
(Santrock, 2014)
Physical Self
 Obvious change in teenager
 Refers to the concrete dimensions of the
body
 The tangible aspect of the person which
can be directly observed and examined.

 Are the defining traits or features of the
person’s body.

Tips to have a Good Physical Self
Image
1. Recognize that your body is your own, no matter
what shape or size it comes in.
2. Identify which aspects of your appearance you can
realistically change and which you cannot.
3. If there are things about yourself that you want to
change and can, do this by making goals for
yourself.
4. When you hear negative comments coming from
within, tell yourself to stop.
5. Try building your self-esteem by giving yourself three
compliments everyday.
How to build a Positive Body Image
1. Appreciate all that your body can do.
2. Keep a top ten list of things you like about yourself.
3. Remind yourself that “true beauty” is not simply skin-deep.
4. Look at yourself as a whole person.
5. Surround yourself with positive people.
6. Shut down those voices in your head that tell you your body
is not “right” or that you are a “bad” person.
7. Wear clothes that you are comfortable and make you feel
good about your body.
8. Become a critical viewer of social and media messages.
9. Do something nice for yourself.
10. Use the time and energy that you might have spent worrying
about food, calories, and your weight to do something to help
others.
