God Sees The Truth, But Waits

(Summary)

Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov is a merchant living in Vladimir, a town in Russia.

Although Aksionov is prone to drinking, he is not violent, and he is responsible
and well-liked by people who know him. One day he decides to go to a fair as a
business venture, but his wife pleads for him not to go because of
a nightmare she had the previous night in which he had greyed hair. Aksionov
disregards his wife's dream and leaves for the fair.

Aksionov meets another merchant on his way, and the two decide to travel
together. They check into an inn and have a good time drinking. Then they retire
separately. Aksionov wakes early in the next morning to get to the fair and leaves
without the other merchant. Not far down the road, Aksionov stops and is
approached by a few policemen. They explain that a merchant was just murdered
and robbed and then search Aksionov's bag. They find a bloody knife, and despite
Aksionov's claims that he is not the murderer, he is sentenced and sent to Siberia.
After his trial flogging, his wife can finally visit him, and she sees that Aksionov's
hair has begun to go gray from the stress.

7
Aksionov spends 26 years in Siberia. Resigned to his plight, he dedicates
his life to God. He becomes a mediator of sorts in the prison, and he is well
respected by the other prisoners as well as by the guards. One day some new
prisoners, one of them being Makar Semyonich, are transferred to the prison.
After overhearing several conversations, Aksionov is convinced that Makar
Semyonich is the man who committed the murder for which he was blamed.

One day the guards notice that someone has been strewing dirt around
the grounds, and they search the prison and find a tunnel. Aksionov had found
out earlier that it was Makar Semyonich who was digging the hole, but, after being
questioned by the police, Aksionov declares that it is not his place to speak about
the matter. Makar Semyonich approaches Aksionov that night in a terrible state,
eventually admitting to Aksionov that it was he who killed the merchant and he
also planned to murder Aksionov but spared him after hearing noises. Aksionov
forgives Semyonich, and he feels as if a terrible weight has been lifted. Makar
Semyonich confesses to the authorities, and the process for Aksionov to be
cleared begins. However, Aksionov dies before he can be released.

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro – About 12,000 locally stranded individuals (LSIs) were able
to register in a website that was set up for those planning to go back to their respective hometowns
in Oriental Mindoro.
Oriental Mindoro Governor, Humerlito A. Dolor, said the provincial government has already set

Batangas Port.
Dolor said that the travel schedule for LSIs coming from the MIMAROPA region (Occidental
Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) and students who were locked down in CALABARZON
(Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) was set on Monday, May 17, until Tuesday, May 18.
May 20 to 23 have been allotted for residents who were stuck in areas under general community
quarantine (GCQ) like Panay Island, Batangas, Cavite, Quezon, Rizal and the Bicol region.
May 24 and beyond will be for those stranded in modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ)

COVID (coronavirus disease 2019) Shield will be allowed to board sea vessels provided they follow
the guidelines at the ports.
Dolor said that he will ask the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to facilitate
the processing of the travel passes of all registered LSIs who are scattered in different locations in
the country.
At present, MIMAROPA region, which is categorized under GCQ, has 36 COVID-19 positive cases,

Gloating over ABS-CBN’s fate
(Philippine Daily Inquirer/05:02 AM July 16, 2020)

No one is more visibly gloating over the demise of ABS-CBN than Solicitor General Jose
Calida. President Duterte is, of course, just keeping up appearances that he had no idea that
this minions in the House of Representatives were tearing that network’s application for
franchise renewal to shreds to please him.
So have presidential chief legal counsel Salvador Panelo and presidential blabbermouth Harry
Roque been feigning ignorance all this time and insulting everyone’s intelligence by lying
through their teeth.
Calida, for his part, was said to be only concerned with the “rule of law”. That is so rich coming
from a “public servant” who was found by the Commission on Audit (COA) to have amassed
P7.46 million in excess of the lawful benefits he was entitled to and was categorically ordered
to return the same since 2016 (“The unusual power of Jose Calida,” Kris-Crossing Mindanao,
2/17/20).
That was on top of what he was collecting in the millions of taxpayer money per annum as
solicitor general. The “tribune of the people” has, of course, shrugged off that COA demand. It
seems the saying in the Avelino days of long ago is still very much in vogue: “What are we in
power for?”

the link, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_hi8qtYEBk. In case you
don’t have the internet access, your teacher will provide you a copy of the
video. List down the important details discussed in the clip and be ready
to answer the comprehension questions later.

In the absence of the

internet connection and a copy of
the video clip from your teacher,
here’s what the speaker is
discussing in the video.

Close your eyes and imagine a world where you wouldn’t have to
ride a plane or a boat or a car to be able to go to places. This is
what world literature can do. It can take you to places without

language is a form of communication. World literature is the totality

Now that we know what it is all about, let’s discuss why world
literature is important.

First it expands our horizon. When we study literature, our

horizons are broaden because we can learn about and come to

literature allows people to develop new ideas and have an ethical

the world around us better.

15
Second, it gives us an opportunity to take a look in the past. Literature
is also a form of time travel that helps us put today in context. To be
able to read about how people live in the past can really make us
appreciate what humanity is able to accomplish and endure.
Literature is a valuable source of cultural knowledge. For centuries,
people would express their opinion on what certain things are about
and they would document news events. These texts are seen as a
reflection of a nation’s culture.

Lastly, appreciation for other cultures and neighbors. World literature

is used as a medium to put it towards the culture and beliefs that can
reach every corner of the world. To know about these in a specific area
in obtaining knowledge of the cultures and beliefs of a place, we would
learn to respect and accept diversity. Literature provides readers the
culture of specific community. It represents a personal voice of a
culture. World literature is important, an eye-opener. It reaches
hearts all over the world. It is a medium to spread awareness. That is
what world literature is.

Activity 2: Read and Understand

Directions: The text below discusses what world literature is all about. Read it with
comprehension, and answer the questions that follow

What is World Literature?

World literature is the totality of all national literatures. The

formation of literature in different countries happened not at the
same time, which is connected with the emergence of writing and
artistic creativity.

Each nation’s literature has its own artistic and national features.
World literature is very important for studying, still the literature
of one country develops together with other national literatures.
They enrich each other borrowing certain literary elements. There
are a lot of scientific works on world literature, which explain the
peculiarities of this phenomenon. As a concept, world literature
emerged only in the 19th century when the literary connections of
different countries had spread and strengthened.

17
The term “world literature” was introduced by Jogann Wolfgang von Goethe. He
used the word “Weltliteratur” in 1827. Goethe studied the characteristic features
and interrelationships of different national literatures, the tendencies of their
development and their achievements. He studied the works of famous writers
which presented different literary phenomena of different historic periods.

He claimed that literature shouldn’t be restrained by national boundaries. In 1894

the world saw the first book about world literature – “The history of world
literature”. The world literature emerged because of the development of global
economic and cultural relations.

This global literary process was also caused by the rapid development of national
literatures. In the history of world literature, we define several stages of its
development such as the literature of Bronze Age, Classical literature, Early
Medieval literature, Medieval literature, Early Modern and Modern literature.

World literature is the cultural heritage of all humanity. It is essential to study world
literature as it helps us understand the life of different people from all over the
world, forms our world-outlook and acquaints us with the masterpieces of
literature.

Finding Information

You may assume, automatically, that academic text books are

the primary sources of information when you are engaged in formal
study program. This may be true, to a degree, usually there is little
need to question the credibility of such texts – they have probably
been recommended by a tutor. There are, however, many other
sources of information which should not be overlooked. Such
sources include: the internet, newspapers, journals, transcripts from
radio or TV programs, leaflets, photographs and other artefacts
(man-made objects).
Within the category of books there are many different types and
genres. For example: fiction and non-fiction, including dictionaries,
encyclopedias, biographies, almanacs, archives, yearbooks and
atlases, to name just few. There are even more categories of websites
and other internet resources. All sources of information can be
relevant depending on the subject matter of the research or project
you’re working on.
It is important to understand that all information will have a
certain degree of validity or otherwise. A document can be easily
forged or altered, especially on the internet where anybody can
publish anything. It is therefore necessary to use judgment when
deciding which documents to use in the context of your study.
