measure anaerobic capacity.
You are the coach of a local club hockey team who play in first division. It is the start of pre-season
training and you want to know the aerobic and anaerobic capabilities of each player.
Describe two tests for your players suitable to measure aerobic capacity, and two tests suitable to

FITNESS TEST
PURPOSE AND FITNESS COMPONENT
BEEP TEST
The beep test is used to measure the aerobic fitness
component.“t was developed to measure someone's
cardiovascular fitness level and to see their maximum oxygen
intake (VO2 MAX).
42-MINUTE RUNICOOPER RUN
(AEROBIC CAPACITY)
Itis an easy way to measure aerobic fitness and provide an
estimate of Vo2 max for military personne It is used by many
coaches and trainers to determine cardiovascular fitness and
track fitness over time.
30 SECOND WINGATE TEST
(ANAEROBIC CAPACITY)
‘The 30 second Wingate test is to measure the anaerobic power of
the lower body-t was developed to determine peak anaerobic
power and the mean power output in a 30 second period“
‘45 SECOND RUN TEST
(ANAEROBIC CAPACITY)
Itis commonly used by track and field coaches as a measure oF
speed endurance ‘for 400 800 metre runners. The aim of the
test is to complete the maximum distance in 45-seconds. It
measures the anaerobic fitness component.(b) Explain the procedure for conducting each test, including how it is measured.

Part 2
As an experienced coach, you know that hockey requires an equal contribution of aerobic and
anaerobic energy systems. However, after evaluating the results of each player's fitness test, you
notice that aerobic capacity is generally weaker that anaerobic capacity.
(c) Identify three principles of training to improve players’ aerobic capacity. (3 marks)
-Progressive overload /
“Specificity 7
Reversibility /
(4) Define each principle. (marks)
Progressive overload Progressive overload refers to the
process of gradually overloading the
| body with either volume, intensity,
frequency or time in order to reach a
specific goal.
‘Specificity The word specificity comes from the
observation that the adaptation of the
body or change is physical fitness is
specific to the type of training
undertaken. If a fitness objective is to
| increase flexibility, then you must train
flexibility and stretch.
Reversibility ‘His term is used to tell the athletes if
they stop training or working out they
will ose the effects and muscles, gain
from the training or work out.
(e) _Desoribe how each principle works to improve aerobic capacity.
(6 marks)
They all tie in with each other. The Progressive overload helps to increase the
body's overall volume, intensity and the amount of time that person is capable of
working forSpecificity will help to achieve the persons final goal as they will need
to work on a certain training in order to achieve that goal.“The more times the
athlete works on something the aerobic capacity will increase as it slowly gets used
to doing that activity/The reversibility will help to improve the athletes aerobic. -
