Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also
aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
As a Facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
ii
For the Learner:
Welcome to the Mathematics 5 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module 16 on
Dividing Simple Fractions and Whole Numbers !
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.
What I Need to Know This will give you an idea of the skills or
competencies you are expected to learn in the
module.
iii
Additional Activities In this portion, another activity will be given
to you to enrich your knowledge or skill of the
lesson learned.
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of the
module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer What I Know before moving on to the other activities
included in the module.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are
not alone.
We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain a deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!
iv

Lesson Dividing Simple Fractions
1 and Whole Numbers
What’s In
In the previous module, you have learned the reciprocal of a number and the
multiplicative inverse of each other. To find the reciprocal of a fraction, interchange
the numerator and denominator. Let us have a review of the previous lesson;
𝟐 𝟐 𝟑
Let us take . The reciprocal of is .
𝟑 𝟑 𝟐
2 3 6
Multiplying the number and its reciprocal, we have × = = 1.
3 2 6
𝟐 3
So, and are reciprocals or the multiplicative inverse of each other.
𝟑 2
1
If × = 1 , what is the missing factor?
2
36 1
If × 7 5 = 1, 𝑤ℎ𝑦 ? 𝐸𝑥𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑖𝑛.
5
Remember,
If the product of two numbers is 1, then they are reciprocals of one another.
What’s New
Study the examples below on dividing whole number by a fraction and vice versa.
3
𝟑 𝟒 𝟓 𝟐𝟎 𝟐
𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝟏) 𝟒÷ = 𝒙 = 𝒐𝒓 𝟔
𝟓 𝟏 𝟑 𝟑 𝟑
𝟒 𝟐 𝟒 𝟑 𝟏𝟐 𝟔
Lesson 2) ÷𝟑= 𝒙 = 𝒐𝒓

2
Lesson 1) Jose has 2 hectares of farmland. He wants to subdivide it into
3
hectares to plant different crops. Into how many parts can he divide
his farmland?
5 1
Lesson 2) A meter rope is to be cut into pieces that are meter long. How
6 12
Solve this problems in your activity notebook. Then compare your answer with the
solution below.
What Is It
Looking back at the problems above we should write first the number sentence
to identify the dividend and the divisor.
2
Lesson 1) Jose has 2 hectares of farmland. He wants to subdivide it into
3
hectares to plant different
𝟐 crops. Into how many parts can he divide
The number sentence
his farmland? is 2 ÷ =n
𝟑
In your number sentence change the whole number into a fraction by writing
the denominator which is 1. To divide fractions, change the divisor to its reciprocal
and change the operation to multiplication. Then multiply both the numerator then
the denominator.
2
For example: To divide 2 ÷ 3;
2 2 3
2÷ = × =n Change the whole number to a fraction with a denominator of 1.
3 1 2
4
2 3
× =n Find the reciprocal of the denominator and change the operation sign to
1 2
multiplication
6
=n multiply the fractions
2
5 1
Lesson 2) A meter rope is to be cut into pieces that are meter long. How
6 12
many pieces can be cut from the rope?
5 1
The number sentence is ÷ 12 = N
6
In your number sentence, change the divisor to its reciprocal and change the
operation to multiplication. Then multiply both the numerator then the denominator.
5 1 5 12
Solution: ÷ =6 x
6 12 1
5 𝑥 12 60 10
= = = or 10
6𝑥1 6 1
1 5
So 10 pieces, each meter long, can be cut from a meter rope.
12 6
Another example:
𝟑 𝟑
1) Divide: ÷
𝟖 𝟓
Solution:
𝟑 𝟑 𝟑 𝟓
÷ = ×
𝟖 𝟓 𝟖 𝟑
3 5 15 5
× = or
8 3 24 8
