8 Parts of Speech Name___________________

1) NOUN : names a person, place, thing, or idea


(Examples: pilot, Pamela, park, bells, Mars, honesty, peace, etc.)

2) PRONOUN : takes the place of a noun


(Examples: I, he, she, it, we, they, my, our, etc.)

3) VERB : tells what the subject does or what the subject is


(Examples of Action: pitch, put, tip, think, believe, have, etc.)
(Example of Linking: am, is, are, was, were, be, etc.)

4) ADJECTIVE : describes a noun


(Ask: What kind? Which one? How many? How much?)
(Examples: famous, these, three, little, etc.)

5) ADVERB : describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb


(Ask: Where? When? How? To what extent?) Many end in –ly
(Examples: Down, then, carefully, almost, etc.)

6) PREPOSITION : shows a relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word


in the sentence.
(Examples: after, beneath, for, of, to, with, etc.)

7) CONJUNCTION : connects words or groups of words


(Examples: and, but, or, yet)

8) INTERJECTION : expresses strong feeling


(Examples: Wow! Oh, Great! Oops, etc.)
