Introductory Message
Welcome to Grade 4 Science.

The Sci-Box is a product of the collaborative efforts of the Division of Iloilo

Elementary Science Teachers Association (DIESTA) writers, illustrators, layout
artists, reviewers, editors, and Quality Assurance Team from the Department of
Education, Schools Division of Iloilo. This is developed to guide you dear learning
facilitators in helping our learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum.

The Sci-Box aims to guide our learners in accomplishing activities at their

own pace and time. This also aims to assist learners in developing and achieving the
lifelong learning skills while considering their needs and situations.

For learning facilitator:

The Sci-Box is developed to address the current needs of the learners to

continue learning in the comforts of their homes or learning centers. As the learning
facilitator, make sure that you give them clear instructions on how to study and
accomplish the given activities in the material. Learner’s progress must be monitored.

For the learner:

The Sci-Box is developed to help you, dear learner, in your needs to continue
learning even if you are not in school. This learning material aims to primarily provide
you with meaningful and engaging activities for independent learning. Being an
active learner, carefully read and understand the instructions given.

Grade 4 - Science
Competency: Describe changes in the properties of materials when exposed to certain conditions
such as temperature or when mixed with other materials; (S4MT-Ig-f-6)
The Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) of this Sci-Box focuses on
describing changes in the properties of materials when exposed to certain conditions
such as temperature or when mixed with other materials (S4MT-Ig-6).

In the content standard, the learner is expected to demonstrate

understanding of changes that materials undergo when exposed to certain
conditions. At the end of the quarter, the learner is expected to evaluate whether the
changes in materials are useful or harmful to one's environment.

In this part of Sci-Box, the lessons are divided into two namely:

• Lesson 1 - Materials when heated or cooled

• Lesson 2 - Mixing solid materials

After going through this Sci-Box, you are expected to:

• describe what happens when materials are heated;

• describe what happens when materials are cooled;
• describe what happens to the solid materials when mixed with other solid
materials; and
• identify the effect of mixing two solid materials.

Now that you know the lessons included in this Sci-Box, you are now ready to
do the tasks. Do not worry because you can always ask for assistance from your
parents, guardians, siblings and teachers. You will be guided along the way. You are
not alone in taking the challenge.

Remember to answer the given exercises in your activity notebook. When you
are done, kindly return this Sci-Box to your teacher with your answer
sheets/notebook to check and evaluate your level of competency.

Good luck and God bless.

and be able to supply it with the needed answers.

You have a lighted alcohol burner and a tin can with a piece of ice
inside. What do you think will happen to the ice when you put the tin can
over the flame for few minutes? Explain the change/s that took place if
there’s any.

Prediction Explanation

Learn and Do

The materials that we see around us exist in different forms: solid,

liquid, and gas. Like other materials, solid has different characteristics or
properties such as size, shape, color, odor, texture, and others. The
solid materials could also undergo changes when exposed to certain
conditions such as temperature or when mixed with other materials.

Grade 4 - Science
Competency: describe changes in the properties of materials when exposed to certain conditions 3
such as temperature or when mixed with other materials; (S4MT-Ig-f-6)
Now let’s do a simple activity to know more about materials when
heated or cooled.

Directions: Perform the activity and answer the questions that follow in
your activity notebook.

Note: Handle the materials carefully. Ask help / assistance from your
parents, siblings or any adult in doing the activity.

Activity: Hot’n Cold

Objective: Describe what happens to solid materials when heated or
cooled.

Materials Needed:

2 pcs. old tablespoon 1 pc. of crayon

match/lighter 1 spoonful of sugar
candle

1 pc. gloves (made of thick cloth/any thick cloth to handle hot

material

What to do:

1. Light the candle with a matchstick or lighter.

2. Don’t forget to wear gloves.
3. Put a piece of crayon on the tablespoon and position the base
of the spoon on the candle fire. Remain the position for at
least 3 minutes. Observe the change/s that took place.
4. Do the same process with the spoonful of sugar.
5. After heating the crayon and sugar, take note of the changes
you observed as well as their physical state.
6. Leave the materials for awhile. Let it cool for 20-30 minutes,
then check for another observation.

Answer these!
1. What happened to each material (crayon and sugar) when
heated? Why?
2. Is there a change in the appearance of the material? What
change took place?
3. How would you describe the change/s that happened to the
material when heated?

Grade 4 - Science
Competency: describe changes in the properties of materials when exposed to certain conditions 4
such as temperature or when mixed with other materials; (S4MT-Ig-f-6)
4. What happens to the material when cooled? Why?
5. Is there a change in the appearance of the material?
6. How would you describe the change/s that happened to the
material when cooled?
7. Describe the properties of the material when they are heated
and cooled.

Learn and Do

Mixture is formed by combining two or more materials. It can be

classified depending on the appearance of the resulting mixture.

When the solid material is mixed with other solid materials, each of
the combined or mixed materials can be easily identified or distinguished
from one another. Such mixture is called heterogeneous mixture.

Examples: rock salt and pepper

monggo beans and rice grains

Grade 4 - Science
Competency: describe changes in the properties of materials when exposed to certain conditions 9
such as temperature or when mixed with other materials; (S4MT-Ig-f-6)
Some solid materials, when mixed with other solids, cannot be
distinguished from each other. If the resulting mixture looked the same
throughout, such mixture is called homogeneous mixture
.
Examples: flour and sugar
powdered milk and flour
