IMPORTANT INSTRUCTION: When you scan/take pictures of your work, include your I.D. at
the lower right of the first page only. Make sure that there will be no writings at the portion where
you will place your I.D.

Use the digits of your student number for your given.

𝑥 = 4𝑡ℎ 𝑑𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟
𝑦 = 5𝑡ℎ 𝑑𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟
𝑧 = 6𝑡ℎ 𝑑𝑖𝑔𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟

Ex. 2018-100234
x = 2, y = 3, z = 4
If the given is 8.x5 = 8.25
If the given is 78+z =82

PROBLEMS:

1. 5 pts. A soil sample has a total unit weight of 16.9xy 𝑘𝑁 ⁄𝑚3 and a void ratio of 0.8zx. The
specific gravity of the soil particles is 2.69xx. Determine the moisture content of soil in %. (3
decimal places)

2. A dry sand is placed in a container having a volume of 0.0089yy 𝑐𝑚3 . The dry weight of the
sample is 0.014zzg. Water is carefully added to the container so as not to disturbed the
condition of the sand. When the container is filled, the combined weight of soil plus water is
0.017xzg.
a. Find the void ratio of the soil in the container. (3 decimal places)
b. Find the specific gravity of the soil particle. (3 decimal places)
c. Find the effective unit weight of the soil in kN/cu.m. (2 decimal places)

3. 15 pts. The moist unit weight and degree of saturation of a soil are given in the following
table:
𝛾 (𝑝𝑐𝑓) Degree of Saturation

112.yz 75.y
a. Determine void ratio. (3 decimal places)
b. Determine the specific gravity of soil. (3 decimal places)
