1. In tribal societies where the belief in w itchcraft is constitutional, the peoples consis
ten tly make use o f an expression such as “ witchcraft is increasing,” or “ the country is filthy
w ith witches,” or some variant o f the same notion. W e tend lo gica lly to attribute this
idea to the natural incidence o f m isfortunes which “ superstitious natives” alw ays interpret
as resulting from m align m agical influence. P sych olo gica lly, however, we could m ore plaus
ib ly view these sayings as a projection o f the constant gnawing dissatisfaction w ithin the
human breast which people alw ays com plain about but also alw ays clin g to, as if its ache
were itself the germ o f a future fulfillm ent. A t any tim e or place—the witches are increas
ing. H o w could it be otherwise w ith man, so long as repression confronts him? M a lin ow
ski attributes the origin o f m agical beliefs to a mechanism o f w ish-projection or em otion
extended sym bolically. D esire is the key to this explanation. T h e w itch is a dream er en
gaged in a dream -type action. A n d conversely, every dream er, every desirous person is

2. Since I find M alin ow ski’s thesis w h o lly acceptable, I also find it necessary to accept
L u cy M a ir’s seem ingly bland conception o f the w itch as the stereotypical “ bad neighbor.”
T h is social anthropologist has accurately taken the measure o f the w itch from the per
spective o f social science. T h e w itch is an enem y of the group, a hostile, p etty rebel. T h e
aims and goals, or else the methods, o f the w itch are alw ays an in frin gem en t of roles and
taboos. T h e w itch kills, disturbs the elem ents, obtains m eat he did not have to hunt, or
commands the services o f zom bies to tend his crops, etc. T h e w itch in fa ct enjoys com
m unity w ith a society o f beings (fam iliars, zom bies, fello w witches, ghosts, anim als) within
which satisfaction denied ordinary men and wom en is available. B y acting on a premise
o f desire in defiance o f a taboo, any m agical operative becomes a w itch by M a ir ’s defini
tion. Is this definition too broad? I think not. I f w e were to submit it to members o f tribal
societies from various quarters o f the globe, I am sure that all respondents w ould con
firm that this is indeed the w itch w e have described.
3. Is not the point made that man does not necessarily wish to rem ain confined within
human society or social hum anity? T h e w itch universally, strange clans such as the pseu
do-leopards o f Sierra Leone, the w erewolf, the vam pire, are all examples o f human beings
who have entered a comm unity too broad fo r ordinary social taboos to regulate. Em m an

rebels however, a certain Jean Grenier, was condem ned to death for being, additionally—
a werewolf.
In the days o f Jean G renier (th e 16th cen tu ry) there w ere m an y rem ote peasant com
munities in Europe that had not been essentially altered by Christianity, which had long
since “ converted” Europe. T h e final conversion o f the continent, so it appears, was a
long pacification struggle conducted against the culture and the natural religion (th e O ld
R elig ion o f M argaret M u rra y ) o f those rural societies that w ere oldest and geographic
a lly w ell suited in terms o f their self-defense. T o this day the process is not total. I t would
be interesting to determ ine what relation the concentration and dispersion o f such groups
had to the geographical pattern o f persecution in the centuries o f all-out witch-hunting,
1450-1650. D id the peasant bring his archaic beliefs to the less rem ote villages, and later
to the towns, thus precipitating a reaction on the part o f the church?
4. Critics o f M argaret M urray, and they include some o f the leading authors in the field
o f European witchcraft, deny that w itchcraft can be iden tified w ith a pre-Christian reli
gion o f the continent. Y e t these authorities w ould be the last to d en y that survivals o f pag
anism existed; indeed th e y still exist even in such unlikely places as Ita ly . W h a t is more,
it is well-known to a ll who have glanced at the subject that the church itself at times
identified participation in any paganism as traffic with Satan, and hence w itchcraft. D oes
this not suggest that M u rra y is essentially correct, even leavin g aside her analysis o f the
specific archaeological evidence?
L u cy M a ir refutes M u rray b y applying her em pirical definition o f the w itch as an anti
social person acting hostilely through magic. H ow , she asks, can the regular devotee o f a
tradition ally accepted cult be a w itch if the w itch is b y definition an outsider m orally and
ritu alistically? One can only answer that the hypothetical “ O ld R e lig io n ” was in fact an
outlaw in the days o f the w itch trials. I f applied from the perspective o f larger historical
forces, M a ir’s definition includes M u rra y’s analysis as a specific ^case. Im p lic it in ap
proach is the expectation that w ith in the old, pre-Christian comm unities o f E u rope there
w ere individuals who practiced m alefic m agic outside the rites and accepted mores of
those societies. T h a t is, when the “ O ld R elig io n ” was the norm, there w ere also witches
apart from it. I t is highly pos^smfe that the pressure o f conflict w ith C hristianity caused the
devotees o f the archaic religions to fall back upon their most violen t traditions (w itch craft
traditions?) in a defensive reflex. T h e peasants o f Friuli, up to the 17th century, believed
(in com m on w ith the N yakyu sa o f T a n g a n y ik a ) both in witches and in an elect corp of
“ defenders” who waged supernatural combat with the witches attacking their harvests.

Carlo Ginzburg, a supporter o f M u rray, has established how the pressure o f the Inqu isi
tion eventu ally led the “ defenders” (th e Beruzndanti, “ D o-gooders” ) to id en tify them
selves w ith the witches and confess to witchcraft. G inzburg raises the possibility that this
process o f polarization went on throughout Europe. W h en the Inquisition finally m anaged
to convince the populace that all that was not o f R om e was o f Satan, m illions drew the
only possible conclusions about themselves. E lem ents that had never been o f the church
w ere joined by some that defected from the church. Basing itself upon theology and scrip
ture, the church tried to subdue and rule a w orld in which the imm inent, the M arvelous,
was the fountainhead o f a ll v iv id experience. T h is is w hy the conflict betw een the church
and w itchcraft was to last for centuries and claim m illions o f lives. T h is is w hy it is pos
sible to speak o f a “ R evolu tion o f W itch cra ft” - t h e first great revolution that Europe saw.

istrations o f solitary witches, rebellious lib erty entered the consciousness o f the European
masses threatening the foundations both o f feudalism and theocracy. In the arsenal o f

5. W h ile I have em phasized the rebellious nature o f the w itch and her friends I do not
want to convey a one-dimensional im p re^ io n . T h e w itch is not m erely a social rebel, any
m ore than she is m erely the devotee o f a pre-Christian fertility cult. Rather I w ould in
sist that at the apex o f this com plex o f tribal, rural occultism w e must alw ays recognize

In recent years the idea of witchcraft has been spat upon so repeatedly by commercially inspired authors and publicity-
inspired cult-faddists that one would reasonably ex^pec it to be beyond any kind of redemption. However, the persistence
of witchcraft in its tribal and rural settings in many parts of the world, combined with the serious attention of ^wial sci
entists, has made it possible to address this phenomena on its proper level, while at the same time appreciating the dismal
“ witchcraft fad" to a certain extent as its nnperfect emanation. Tlie “ proper level” referred to is tnat of a symptomatol
ogy of the universal disease of desire as it is em^bodied in myth, magic and oracular knowledge; and in addition to this, a
particular kind of revolt, since it is im^^sible to di^ssociate witchcraft from revolt. While this proposition owes a great

U.S. history. Throughout his adult life he traveled ceaselessly around the country as an IW W
organizer and hobo. Best known for his satirical songs (several of which are included in the
IW W songbook) he also wrote a regular column for the IW W weekly in du strial solid a rity, and
contributed frequently to other IW W publications, up to his death in 1942. His writing, char
acterized by wild humor and constant, almost oneiric, shifting of the subject, reveals his remark
able receptiveness to the most playful possibilities of language, and participates fully in that
