Tools you need for drawing

In the learning phase the quality of tools is not important. Feel free to choose the budget options. You
can discover professional, more expensive materials later.

This is not an advertisement, so I won’t attach links to products, but you can easily search them based on
their names wherever you like to do the shopping.

Traditional Tools
Paper
Example: Office paper A4 210x297mm 80gsm

Pencils
Graphite pencil

I suggest 4B grade to start with. It’s soft enough to draw and shade easily on copy paper. But you can try
2B/3B or HB too. Even you can draw with an H grade pencil, but its hardness is high, so you can only
draw thin and pale lines with that.

Woodless graphite pencil

This one is perfect for shading bigger areas. You can easily change the weight of your strokes or lines.
You definitely want B grade from this type of pencil.

Pencil sharpener
You might want to choose one with plastic barrel canister which holds the trash. This one has two
different sizes of sharpener built in.

Erasers
Traditional eraser

Cut the triangles from the corners shown by blue dashed lines in the 2nd picture. This way you’ll be able
to erase smaller and bigger areas.

Electric eraser

This tool includes a small rotating engine powered by a battery. You can precisely erase very small areas.
If you’re serious about drawing, you’ll definitely need one.

White Gel-Pen
This is a great tool for creating tiny highlights on your drawing. An eraser cannot create this effect.

Digital Tools
iPad + Apple Pencil
The best available tool for drawing digitally is the iPad (Pro) + Apple Pencil combination. Make sure that
you check their compatibility with each other because many versions out there in the market.

The “cheapest” option is the newest 10.2” iPad (7) with the Apple Pencil (ver 1). This is also a good
portable solution.

But if you plan to be a professional artist, the more expensive 12.9” iPad Pro + the Apple Pencil 2
combination might be the best option. This one has the biggest screen size.

Photoshop on a desktop computer

If you have a desktop computer and already have Photoshop installed, you can buy a graphic drawing
tablet. The downside of this option is that you draw on the tablet on a table, but your drawing is on the
monitor in a different place. You can get use to this experience quickly and before Apple came out with
the iPad Pro there had not been other choice for artists to draw digitally. So, it’s a perfectly fine option to
create professional artworks, but you need to know that the iPad + Apple Pencil combo brings a higher
level of drawing experience.

A cheap and perfectly good graphic drawing tablet option is the XP-Pen Deco 01 V2. I personally used it
with Photoshop and I was satisfied.
