Activity 1

1. You have learned that the community can be defined in three different

ways. What are the common description among them?

The common description among the three diferrent ways of community is that

they are all have similarities and has something in common that makes them a

community the first way is the community defined as shared political teritory and

heritage it means the group of people living in the same geographical are either as

neighbourhood, village town or city where interpersonal ties are locally bounded and

are based on a shared government and a common cultural and historical heritage.

Second way is community is also defined as Network of interpersonal ties based

on common interest. It means these ties, in turn, provide mutual support, a sense of

identity and a sense of belongingness for the members.

Last ways is community as profound sharing spiritual and emotional connection it

means they understand each other in a sense of emotion and spirituality having

realization that individual actions are inevitably linked to others which evoke

meaningful attachments.

2. What is the importance of symbols and language for human beings in the

context of community cultural structure?


Language is a symbolic system through which people communicate and through

which culture is transmitted. Some languages contain a system of symbols used for

written communication while others rely’ only Spoken Communication and non

verbal actions. Symbols such as gestures, signs, objects, signals and words help

people they provide clues to understanding experiences by conveying recognizable

meanings that are shared by societies.

It is very important in the context of community cultural structure because it is

one of the most important parts of any culture it is the way by which people

communicate with one another, build relationships and create a sense of community.

3. What are the different community sectors? State their specific functions?

There are four different types of community sectors first is Public sector this

sector is responsible for promoting the common good, providing security from

external threats and maintaining peace and order. Second is Private Sector this

sector is responsible for producing goods and services to meet people’s need and

wants promoting economic growth and generating wealth. This is Voluntary Sector

this sector is also known as non profit organization term usually reserved for NGO’s,

faith based organization or civil society organizations that promote the development

of the full potential of Human beings, safeguard their human rights and pursue socio

civic causes for the good of humanity and environment. Last is for Benefit Sector this

sector was also known as for benefit-corporation, hybrid merger of the

characteristics found in private and public sectors.


4. Among the different methods in identifying power actors, which is the

easiest thing to do?

Social Participation Method this involves developing a list of leaders and active

participants in committee works in key community voluntary associations include the

extent to which such associations are attuned in addressing community concerns,

their resource base and their relevance to a certain community decision being

studied.

5. What is the basic difference between community action and community

engagement?

Community action is for people to work in solidarity in order to address a certain

social problem while Community engagement is the process of developing

partnerships and sustaining relationships with through gourps of people, who are

affiliated by geographical proximity or common interests and address issues that

affect their well being.

6. What is the common purpose of CAT and NSTP?

The Citizenship Advancement Training or CAT aims to enhanced the students by

social responsibility and commitment to the development of their communities and

develop their ability to uphold law and order as they assume active participation in

community in time of emergency.

The National Service Training Program or NSTP aimed at enhancing civic

consciousness and defence preparedness in the youth by developing the ethics of


services and patriotism while undergoing training in any of its three program

components.

7. What problems did the health workforce encounter in the country today?

Health workers are at a high risk of catching the viral infection (COVID 19) and

they need appropriate personal protective equipment. In addition, and varying

between countries, they also face threats and are exposed to violence. For example,

people suspected of carrying the virus may violently object to screening or

quarantining. In some countries, health workers experience assaults on their way to

work as asecurity forces attempt to enforce lockdowns.

8. What do you think is the connection between poverty and discrimination?

If one is economically backward, one gets automatically discriminated in more

ways than one. But when one is discriminated, the reason may not be due to

poverty. Thus the relationship is not two sided, not necessarily. The most common

way people being discriminated is because they are poor, and it is less common to

get poor because of discrimination.

9. What is the difference between civil rights and political rights?

Civil rights include the right to life, liberty and personal security, the right to be

equal before the law, the right to be protected from arbitrary arrest, the right to the

due process of law, the right to a fair trial, and the right to practice religious freedom

and worship. Civil rights also establish the right of every child to be registered and to

have a name and nationality.


Political rights includes guarantee of an individual’s involvement in public affairs,

which include the right to speech and expression, the right to assembly and

association and the right to vote and participate in political affairs.

10. What is the main difference of empowerment as a process and as a state?

Empowerment as a process is defined as enhancing the capacity of the

individual or group to make purposive choices and transform them into desire

actions and outcomes while the Empowerment as a state is defined as an individual

or group having the capacity to both make purposive choices and transform them

into desire actions and outcomes.
