Final Performance Task

Application of Derivative

1. A telephone company wants to estimate the number of new residential phone lines that it
will need to to install during the upcoming month. At the beginning of January the
company had 100,000 subscribers, each of whom had 1. phone lines, on average. The
company estimated that the its subscribership was increasing at the rate of 1000 monthly.
By polling, its existing subscribers, the company found that each intended to install an
average of 0.01 phone lines by the end of January. Estimate the number of new phone
lines that the company will have to install in January by calculating the rate of increase of
lines at the beginning of the month.

Solution :

Let s(t) be the number of subscribers

Let n(t) be the number of phone line per subscribers
Let L(t) be the total number of subscribers

t is measured in months and t = 0 is at the beginning of January.

L’(t) = s’(1000)•n(1.2)+s(100,000)•n’(0.01)
= 1200 + 1000
= 2200
Conclusion : Therefore, the number of new phone lines that the company will have to
install in January is 2200 phone lines.

2.
If a ball is thrown vertically upward with a velocity of 80ft/s, then its height after t
seconds is s(t)= 80t-16t2. What is the maximum height reached by the ball?

s’(t) = 80 – 32t
0 = 80 – 32t
32t = 80
t= 80/32 = 5/2 or 2.5 seconds.

s(2.5) = 80(2.5) - 16(2.5)2

= 200 – 100 = 100ft
Conclusion : Hence, the maximum height that the ball reached is 100ft.

3. The displacement (in meters) of Michael in a Olympic size pool in a straight line from
point A to point B by the given equation of motion s=f(t)= 4t3 +3t+10, where t is
measured in seconds. Find the displacement (in meters) of Michael after t=2.

s= f(t)= 4t3 +3t+10

s= f(t)= 4(2)3 +3(2)+10
s= f(t)= 4(8) +6+10
s= f(t)= 32 +6+10
s=f(t)= 48 meters

Conclusion : Therefore, the displacement of Michael after 2 seconds is 48 meters.

Reflection Paper for the Application of Derivative

I thought that learning Basic Calculus is very hard but it isn’t that hard especially
when you have a good teacher. In Basic Calculus we will encounter the Derivative. I thought
derivative is as simple as any other topic but I’m wrong.

The first time I encounter the derivative it looks like a simple math equation. As
the discussion goes by I witnessing that the derivative became complicated because of its
properties. I thought that I cannot use these properties in real life but as my teacher explains it I
understand that we can use it in our daily life. If we are businessman, one of the properties of
derivative can help us to figure the costing of our business.

I can say that derivative is a quite hard in all of the lesson of Basic Calculus, as of
now. Derivative can make our brain bleed but that bleed is worth it because we can make our life
more easier especially in the field of business and technology. Derivative is one of the useful
things that we can use after we graduated when we’re starting in building-up our careers. I
recommend that we should learn this because it’s very useful to those businessman.
