Josephine Bracken

 Ayon kay Josephine Bracken ay totoo ang retraction ni Rizal sapagkat sila ay kinasal. Ngunit paano ito
mapapatunayan kung wala naming ebidensya na magtitibay sa claim na ito.

- Inisaad rin na matagal ng sumulat ng retraction si Rizal upang pakasalan si Josephine Bracken ngunit di
pumayag ang simbahang katoliko hangga’t di niya binabawi ang sinulat niya
- “In Father Balaguer’s statement, he said that Rizal retracted because he wanted to marry Josephine Bracken,
who was a Catholic, but when he was asked to show a certificate, he was not able to present anything. It
was impossible for the marriage to be the reason of retraction because there was no marriage certificate
found. There was no certificate that legalizes the marriage between Josephine Bracken and Jose Rizal.”

- “But what makes this ordinary book extraordinary is an inscription on the flyleaf that reads: “To my dear and
unhappy wife Josephine. December 30th 1896. Jose Rizal.”

- Aside from the Kempis in the National Museum, the other physical clue to the Rizal-Bracken marriage is a
handwritten autobiography preserved in the Lopez Museum where Bracken concludes with a declaration
that “Before his execution, he married me at 5 o’clock in the morning.”
- In this document, whose authenticity has been questioned, she signed herself “Josephine Bracken de Rizal, a
widow.”

- To dispute these, letters by Rizal have been presented to prove he never referred to her as his wife but
rather as Josephine, Miss Josephine, Miss J or Miss B.
 Walang katibayan ang kasal ni Rizal at Josephine. Masasabing isa lamang ilusyon ang pagtawag na “Wife” ni Rizal
kay Josephine sa huling sulat niya noong mga huling sandal bago ang kaniyang execution.
