Ang bansang yumaman dahil sa ipot ng ibon

Nestled amongst a cluster of islands in the Central Pacific is Nauru, a small country with an
insane story. This is a story of a country that journeyed from rags to riches and back to rags. It’s a
cautionary tale of what happens when a nation exploits its natural resources at the expense of people’s
lives.
One of the factors that made their economy rich is that almost the entire surface of the island
was once covered with a thick layer of guano, sedimentary seagulls’ droppings that accumulated over
several millennia. They find out that high level of phosphorus in Nauru, guano or ipot made it an ideal
raw material for fertilizers and explosives. Moreover, exploitation of the island's guano reserves started
at the turn of the last century. In 1975, the country earned the equivalent of $2. 5 billion more than
enough to satisfy its then population of 7,000 people. Phosphate export had afforded a high standard of
living and high buying power for the people of Nauru for decades. Now that the phosphate stock now
almost depleted and the downfall of the economy there has been an emergence of critical thought on
sustainable livelihoods. A major concern of both the government of Nauru and the donor community is
the worsening food security situation faced by the country. Agriculture and Fisheries have been
identified as priority sectors for development in view of their direct link to and role in improving
nutrition and food security.
Rolling in riches, the locals abandoned their traditional lifestyles, they become greedy and
materialistic. They become overwhelmed of what they have in that time and they did not think of the
consequences that they might get from what they’ve done. It is a lesson that no matter how rich their
country is if they don’t know how to spend and balance all of that they will eventually returned in the
place where they belong first. Mismanagement of finances, wrong decision making, corrupt officials,
also spending too much in something that is useless, Lack of health knowledge, Lack of knowledge about
politics, lack of love from the nature and other factors that lead to their country’s poor status. The
government and the people of this country weren’t responsible and did not discipline themselves
because of that the effects were really heavy to handle and that includes, poverty, lack of work and poor
education. Nauru had become insufficient to provide food and their economy has fallen into crisis. The
people in this country turned to unhealthy food, alcohol and cigarettes. It wasn’t long before a health
crisis hit, and hard. Life expectancy plunged to just 50, while rates of diabetes, heart disease and other
chronic illnesses skyrocketed along with their waistlines.
To sum it up, we should always bear in our mind that we have to think about the decision that
we have to make so that the outcome become successful. Be responsible enough to discipline one self.
Be a person who has a clear vision of the objectives and plans. We should become a better person to
become the best version of ourselves. We should always remember that no matter how rich you are
eventually it will run out. We have to be contented of what we have and don’t be greedy. Don’t fill your
plate with something that you can’t finish.
