WHAT IS ETHICS?
The term ethics is derived from the Greek work ethos, which
can mean custom, habit, character or disposition.

Mos (nominative) or moris (genitive) is, on the other hand, the

Latin equivalent, which also means custom, or “traditional line of
conduct”. It is from this root word that the word moral or morality
derived. Thus, Ethics is identical to moral science or moral
philosophy.
WHAT IS ETHICS?

At its simplest, ethics is a system of moral principles. It affect

how people make decisions and lead their lives.

Ethics is concerned with what is good for individuals and

society and is also described as moral philosophy. It is said to be the
study of human motivation, and human rational behavior.
WHAT IS ETHICS?
Ignacio (1985) defined ethics as the “practical and philosophical
science of the morality of human acts or human conduct.

Morality - is that quality of human acts by which we call some of this

cats good and some evil.

Human acts - are those actions performed by man: knowingly and

freely, deliberate or intentional actions, or voluntary.

Acts of man - which are instinctive and involuntary.

WHY SHOULD WE STUDY ETHICS?
Studying ethics will give you opportunity to carefully reflect on
the values that shape your life, no chance to think about whether the
values in your society are wise or foolish, no chance to expand your
awareness of the values of the other persons.

Ethics plays a big role in our society since it has a large influence
on today, as well as the future. We need to learn about good ethics
because they guide our decisions, make us who we are, and determine
our future.
THE OBJECT OF ETHICS
There are three object in ethics which are the material object,
formal object, and formula object quo.

Material object
> refers to the subject matter to be studied, namely, the human act.
Formal object
> is the morality of the human act.
Formula objec quo
> is the human reason employed in the study of the course.
IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY OF ETHICS
Importance of studying ethics may be summarized in the following
objectives.:

i. To sharpen the moral nature of the learners by inculcating the moral norms.
ii. To make them aware of the moral principles and laws governing man's actions.
iii. To help students become aware of the intimate relation between their moral
nature and laws.
iv. To shows to the learners that acting in accordance with his rational and moral
nature could lead them to their supernatural destiny-God.
v. To develop in the students a morally upright living.
vi. To let the students realize that people cannot live together harmoniously in
society without the ethical norms and laws applied or followed.
