The history of Canada's treatment of First Nations peoples has been repressive, with the goal of

exploiting their lands and eradicating their cultures. However, many First Nations peoples believe that if
reconciliation attempts are to be genuine, Canada must recognise that indigenous self-governance and
land control must be allowed.
