A Deal with the Devil

by: Patrick B. Cabrestante

Once upon a time, there was a miserable man named Nicolas. He was abandoned by his parents
and was raised in an orphanage. As he grew up, he left the orphanage and started to live on his
own. One day, he found a part-time job and he started saving money so could start a business. As
days passed, he managed to save enough money to run a business. Later on, all of his money was
stolen, he tried to chase the thief but he failed. He asked himself, “Why am I so unfortunate?” As
he was walking home, he saw an old man passing by the street, he was struggling to walk but he
ignored him. As he got to the other side of the road, he heard a car crash. As he looked behind,
the old man was dead after getting hit by a car. He ignored the incident not knowing the old man
was actually his father. As days passed, he lost hope and decided to completely isolate himself.
Nicolas never really believed in God as he believed that humans are made from evil. One night,
Nicolas couldn’t sleep as he constantly hears a whisper on his head. He got mad and shouted
“Why won’t you shut up!” then the whisper stopped. Days passed, he decided to go outside then
he saw an old woman grieving on a gravestone. He saw that the old woman was kind of rich. Out
of despair, he stole her bag and ran away. Little did he know, that was his own mother. The next
day, the police caught him while buying expensive clothes. As he was imprisoned, his inmates
beat him up until he couldn’t stand anymore. One thing that has come to his mind is, “If there is
God, then why is this happening to me.” The next day, he thought, “Since my life had always
been miserable, why don’t I just sell my soul to the devil? Maybe I could get out of this misery if
I do that.” So he waited till midnight so he could try to speak to the whisper on his head. As it
began whispering, he asked it, “Who are you?” The whisper replied, “I am Satan”, then he asked,
“Can you just take my soul? I don’t want to live like this anymore.” Satan replied, “What would
you like in return?” Nicolas replied, “I want to get out of this misery.” Satan replied, “Then it’s
settled”. The next day, he was freed as his mother found out that he was her lost son so she chose
to forgive him and bailed him out. Then he was brought to his mother’s house and he had a long
conversation with her. The night came, he decided to sleep on his mother’s house. That night, he
started hearing whispers on his head again. It says that “Since I own your soul, I own your life,
so follow my orders. If you don’t follow my orders, I’ll take over your life.” Then it ordered him
to kill his mother to get all its wealth. As he woke up, he can’t believe what Satan told him to do.
The night came, he thought to himself that he had no other choice. So he killed his mother and
took away all her wealth. As he ran away from the house, tears flew out of his eyes. Days passed,
he moved to a different country and started a new life. He became rich and he got everything he
wanted. He thought all the whispers on his head would stop, but it didn’t. It ordered him to
commit lots of horrible crimes like ransom, rape, and murder. But he had enough of it. He
decided to cancel out the deal. He thought that the burden was too much for him to handle, and
the devil was taking over his life. The devil refused so Nicolas decided to kill himself. His last
words were “I wonder how things would’ve went if I believed in God.”
