GE 06- Art Appreciation

Block C

1. Why did you choose this object for you to paint?

- I chose this object to paint because it reminds me of my dream to visit Japan. You see, Japan is
my ultimate dream destination. My interest in Japan started when I was watching “Cardcaptor
Sakura”. I had seen a handful of animated movies produced in Japan, but only the series
“Cardcaptor Sakura” compelled me to appreciate the splendor of Japan. From then on, I started
visualizing myself standing in a middle of a pavement, watching the cherry trees in full bloom
and as the wind blows, cherry blossoms floated on the air, circling around me. It was a kind of
dream that I do not want to wake up. Cherry blossoms only last for two weeks in Japan, so I
definitely need to go during that time. If you wanna experience a magical moment, go see those
Cherry blossoms.

2. What did you learned or experienced as you go along in doing this painting?

- Paint is a living language for me, with grammars and nuances that challenge me beyond any
other intellectual or creative pursuit that I have ever experienced. For me, painting as a
language and practice is alive and changing all the time. I study it. I try to keep up with it. I
struggle to speak it better. I am thrilled when I hear others speak it well. I love visiting countries
where it is spoken. I get excited when I discover someone who is adding another layer to its
tapestry of possibilities. And that is happening all the time. Right now. As we speak.

3. What is the message of this painting that you want to convey?

- There is a flower that opens for only a handful of days each year. Blooming in the hundreds,
they gently unfold, reaching their peak as tiny, delicately-colored blossoms. Shortly after, they
die, detaching from their stems and billowing out into the wind in beautiful clouds of petals that
clothe the ground in white and pale pink. Cherry blossoms represents a time of renewal and
optimism. The pops of pink mark the ending of winter and signify the beginning of spring. Due to
their quick blooming season, cherry blossoms also symbolize the transience of life. Cherry
blossoms’ magnificent but brief lifespan, falling a couple of weeks after full bloom, reminds
people that similar to the delicate white-pink flowers a human’s life is also short and beautiful.
