Octal Voice
Regulatory Information
NORTH AMERICA
The Octal Voice Application/Interface Module Set is designed to comply with the requirements of
Part 15 of FCC Rules for a Class A computing device. Operation of this equipment in a residen-
tial area may cause unacceptable interference to radio and television reception, requiring the oper-
ator to take whatever steps are necessary to correct the interference.
Shielded cables should be used with this unit to ensure compliance with the Class A limits. In
addition, the Interface Module must be secured to the chassis by means of firmly tightening secur-
ing screws on the bezel.
This Class A digital apparatus is designed to meet all requirements of the Canadian Interference-
Causing Equipment Regulations.

READY
A -48V power supply must be supplied to the DNX nest for voice to function. The power
supply must be referenced to Telco Ground. In many installations, Telco Ground is the
same as Frame Ground.
There are eight sets of LEDs, one set for each port, and a READY LED.
• LOC - green indicates off-hook status received from the backplane.
• REM - green indicates off-hook status received from the trunk.
• READY - green indicates the module is powered up and on-line.
If an off-hook condition is detected on a port, either the LOC (Location) or REM (Remote)
LED will turn on depending if there is an inbound (LOC) or outbound (REM) call. The
corresponding LOC or REM LED for that port will turn on when the session is estab-
lished.
During initialization, Port 1’s LOC and REM LEDs toggle ON and OFF to indicate Xilinx
load in progress. Once the files are loaded, all LEDs flash simultaneously for 10 sec-
onds and then OFF. When downloading system software, the LOC and REM LEDs on
all 8 ports cascade to indicate the download is in progress. Upon completion of the
download, the Octal Voice Module Set goes through the normal reset functions.
The READY LED indicates the status of the Octal Voice Module Set. It is off-line and
flashes under the following conditions:
• Module Out of Service (All LEDs flash)
• Missing or invalid interface module
• No Connection Map received (Off the Bus)
• Backplane Clock Failure
• Missing Frame SYNC signal
• Hardware write to Backplane Memory inhibited.
Thumb screws are provided at the top and bottom of the bezels to secure the modules in
the chassis and to make an electrical connection to frame ground for regulatory emission
compliance. The electrical connection to frame ground protects the application module
from static discharge.
The following paragraphs describe the three types of interface modules available with
the Octal Voice Application Module.
• Octal 2-Wire FXO/DPT - provides eight Foreign Exchange Office (FXO) or Dial Pulse
Termination (DPT) voice interfaces via a 50-pin Telco type connector. The Octal 2W/
FXO/DPT can detect ringing, and forward or reverse battery current, dependent on
configuration. The 2W/FXO/DPT can extend dial tone to a remote PBX or support
Direct Inward Dialing (DID).
• Octal 2-Wire FXS/PLAR - provides eight Foreign Exchange Station (FXS) voice
interfaces via a 50-pin Telco type connector. The Octal 2W/FXS supports distinctive
ringing, and can utilize loop start, Private Line Auto Ring (PLAR) or ground start
connections to conventional analog telephone devices. Ring generation is integral to
the 2W/FXS.
• Octal 4-Wire E&M - provides eight 4-wire interfaces via two 50-pin Telco type
connectors. It supports Tip, Ring, Tip1, Ring1, E, M, SB, and SG leads.

Figure 2: Interface Modules used with the Octal Voice Application Module.
The following information provides detail about the E&M Interface Module and the Type I
and Type II signaling jumper settings for the eight ports of the module.
The Octal Voice Application Module with the E&M Interface Module supports Type I and
Type II signaling. It does not support Type I and Type II switching. Figures 4 and 5 detail
the E&M interface modules Type I and Type II signaling operations.
A 1200 ohm 2 watt resistor must be installed in the M lead wiring from the PBX to the
DNX in most cases. With the resistor installed, current in the M lead, when it is asserted
should be between 22 and 32 mA.
Install the resistor before connecting to the DNX. After the resistor has been installed
connect the cable to the DNX. Assert the M lead and verify that the voltage drop across
the resistor is between 26 volts and 38 volts.
Connections for the 4 watt E&M module uses 2 punch down blocks for all 8 channels. If
32 mA of current is exceeded add the 1200 ohm 2 watt resistors as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 6 details the ports and pin outs of the E&M Interface Module. It also contains a
table to show you where to place the jumpers for Type I and Type II signaling. Row two
for each port will need a jumper for Type I signaling. Row four for each port will need a
jumper for Type II signaling.
NOTE: Care should be taken when removing or installing jumpers.
Older DNX units have only a Talk Battery input for use by voice modules. This Battery
input is used for both talking and signaling as required by the various voice modules. The
first voice module developed was the E&M which required only Signaling Battery. The
original Talk Battery input was, therefore, by common use “Signaling Battery”.
Updated DNX11 units have both Signaling Battery and Talk Battery inputs to allow cus-
tomers to keep these Batteries separate, if this is their practice. In the DNX4 there is
only a Talk Battery input that is wired and distributed independently to the module slots
as Talk Battery and Signaling Battery. Signaling Battery in the updated units is wired to
the module slots where Talk Battery was wired in the older units. For updated DNX11
units, use Signaling Battery if only one Battery is to be used. This will satisfy the E&M
voice module requirement for Signaling Battery. Voice modules that were designed after
the E&M modules, and require Talk Battery, will sense if Talk Battery is not present and
use Signaling Battery instead.
NOTE: When an AC to –48VDC power supply is used to provide Talk or Signaling Bat-
tery the “+” Battery input must be connected to Telco Ground. Telco Ground is usually
the same as Frame Ground.
To Connect the Talk Battery or Signal Battery to the DNX, follow steps 1-8:
2. Strip the insulation back approximately 1/4 inch from the end of the wires.
3. Note the positions of earth, negative and positive on the talk battery or signal battery
power plug.
4. Remove the talk battery or signal battery power plug from the mating receptacle on
the rear panel (refer to Figure 7).
5. Insert the “earth” wire into the earth terminal and tighten the clamp screw.
6. Insert the “-48 volt supply” wire into the negative terminal and tighten the clamp screw.
Insert the “return” wire into the positive terminal and tighten the clamp screw. For a talk
battery connection, DC Return should be tied to the service provider for the FXO/FXS
Ground Start operations to work properly (refer to Figure 8.
-48VDC (-)
TELCO
Ground
7. Insert the plug into the mating receptacle on the rear panel.
E&M Type I Signaling modules do not use a Battery supply but still require that the “+”
input of Signaling Battery be connected to Telco Ground. Telco Ground is usually the
same as Frame Ground.
FXO_DPT
FXO-DPT modules use Talk Battery for Ground Start mode. If Talk Battery is not sup-
plied in an updated DNX, the FXO-DPT will sense this condition and use Signaling Bat-
tery instead for Ground Start mode.
• Ground Start mode Talk Battery current requirement: .03A per module
• Ground Start mode Signal Battery current requirement, if Talk Battery not supplied:
.03A
• Loop Start mode does not use a Battery. For Loop Start, the “+” input of Talk Battery,
or the “+” input of Signaling Battery if Talk Battery is not supplied, must still be
connected to Telco Ground. (Telco Ground is usually the same as Frame Ground.)
FXS-PLAR modules use Signaling Battery for ringing and Talk Battery for establishing
call connections and talking. If Talk Battery is not supplied in a revised DNX, the FXS-
PLAR will sense this condition and use Signaling Battery instead. If only Talk Battery is
supplied, Private Line Automatic Ringdown (PLAR) will not work.)
• Talk Battery current requirement: .2A per module
• Signaling Battery current requirement: .125A per module
• Signaling Battery current requirement if Talk Battery not supplied: .325A per module
• This chapter is written for ADMINISTRATOR-level users, who add, change, or delete
user information (refer to the System Configuration chapter for a full description of
security levels).
• In order to view the menus associated with the Octal Voice Module, a slot must be
configured for the module type and the Octal Voice Module must be resident in a slot
in the equipment nest. An Octal Voice Interface Module must also be resident in the
same numbered slot as the Octal Voice Application Module. If the slot does not show
a “Configured Type,” refer to “Octal Voice Configuration” on the next page.
• There are three different types of interface modules that can be used with the Octal
Voice Application Module. The interface module must be configured for the correct
type prior to configuring the ports and running diagnostics. To configure the interface
module see Configuring an Interface Module of this chapter for the procedure.
• If you are using the E&M Interface Module, you must determine if your application
requires Type I or Type II signaling. You must physically move the jumper to row 2 for
Type I signaling or row 4 for Type II signaling.
• A connection map must first be configured in order for the Octal Voice Module to
register a status of “On The Bus”. This connection map must be configured for a
speed of 64 K (1 DS0) and Voice. If a connection map is not configured the status will
read “Off The Bus”. Refer to the “Connection Maps” section in this manual to activate
and configure connections maps.

About
From the Octal Voice Card Main Menu you can configure the module, run diagnostic
tests, access utilities, and display module identification (software and hardware revision
levels). These procedures are detailed on the following pages.
Configuration Menu
The Octal Voice Card Configuration Menu allows you to change the voice interface mod-
ule and configure the ports to suit your application needs. The interface module must be
resident in the same slot as the Octal Voice Application Module and the rear module type
must be configured to match the interface module.
The procedures for configuring the rear module type for each of the three interface mod-
ules can be found beginning on the following pages of this section. Configuring the ports
for each of the interface modules are discussed in the following order:
• FXO
• FXS
• E&M
Once the module is set up, its configuration should be saved in order to allow the system
to restore the settings when the system resets.
The Octal Voice Application Module can be used with one of three interface modules.
They are as follows: FXO-DPT Interface Module, FXS-PLAR Interface Module, or E&M
Interface Module.
When an interface module is not resident in the same slot as the Octal Voice application
module the Octal Voice Configured Type Alarm will display that it is critical. This will
change to None when an interface module is present and configured for the correct rear
module type. The Ready LED on the Octal Voice application module will be flashing
green until the interface module is present, configured to the proper rear module type
and on the bus.
When an interface module is first plugged into the DNX, a **No Rear Card** message
appears on the screen of the Voice Card Main Menu and Octal Voice Card Configuration
Menu. The Octal Voice Application Module’s default setting for the rear module type is
the FXO-DPT Interface Module. If the FXS-PLAR Interface Module, or E&M Interface
Module is used, then an **Invalid Rear Card** message appears on the Voice Card
Main Menu and Octal Voice Card Configuration Menu until the module is configured.

Test Type: (option field) A host of tests can be run on an Octal Voice Module Set. One
test for each port or a maximum of eight tests per module set can be selected. The
exception is the Digital Loopback test. The test type should be set to Normal Operation
at the end of your testing period.
• Normal Operation - (default) This is the operating mode the Octal Voice Module Set
is in when you are not performing tests.
• Digital Loopback - Permits testing of logic that generates timing for the transmit and
receive highways. Only one test can be run on one of the 8 ports at a time.
Configuration Maps should be set up prior to running this test. Refer to the
“Connection Maps” section of the manual to configure and activate maps.
• Analog Loopback - Confirms backplane interface logic and transmit/receive highway
timing/control are fully functional. One test for each port or a maximum of eight tests
per module set can be selected. Configuration Maps should be set up prior to
running this test. Refer to the “Connection Maps” section of the manual to configure
and activate maps.
• Backplane Loopback - Puts the channel in the backplane loopback by forcing the
destination time slot to be the same as the source time slot. One test for each port or
a maximum of eight tests per module set can be selected.
• Backplane Loopback with Tx idle - A channel is connected to itself via a backplane
connection. One test for each port or a maximum of eight tests per module set can be
selected.
• Transmit Idle Pattern - The transmit idle pattern will be transmitted from the external
equipment to the CODEC. One test for each port or a maximum of eight tests per
module set can be selected.
• Receive Idle Pattern - An idle pattern is generated by the CODEC toward the
external equipment. One test for each port or a maximum of eight tests per module
set can be selected.
